Unity 5 Announced With WebGL Exporting, Will They Fix Linux Mouse Woes?
19 Mar 2014 at 2:09 am UTC

I don't understand why the title of this article contains a question when that information is in the article and could easily fit within the title (eg: "Unity 5 Announced With WebGL Exporting, No Fix For Linux Mouse Woes").

The really big thing that I'm interested to see is whether there are any performance increases on Linux for Unity 5 games. The launch trailer talks about performance increases in the editor, but nothing about deployed games.

I know I'm definitely not interested in playing games in my web browser, but it'll be interesting to see how people respond to WebGL deployment and how performant it is across platforms.

Fract, A Musical & Vibrant Exploration Game Should Come To Linux
14 Mar 2014 at 3:11 am UTC

This game caught my eye over a year ago now, I think. I'm certain that they'd previously talked about wanting to do Linux, but it's always good to get a more current statement with their release nigh ^_^

Cobalt Action-Platformer Delayed For Linux, Is Anyone Surprised?

Quoting: adolsonThe only thing I hate more than Wine is developers pointing it out to Linux gamers as a solution.
It's worth recognising that they're not telling people that installing and running Wine themselves is a solution, but instead that it's an option for those who would rather not wait the time it will take for the Linux beta to be released. There's a bit of a difference.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance, First CryEngine Game To Support Linux

That was what prompted me to start trying to get in touch with them. They're not really likely to have a "We've given up on finding somebody, so the position is no longer available." page. I'm be keen to have just a little bit more confirmation (and some information on what their plans are if we can get ahold of that).

So far I've tried two or three (the press and engine inquiries were the first that I tried), but I'm going to continue until we hear something, or see a CryEngine title in the wild.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance, First CryEngine Game To Support Linux

Quoting: Quote from liamdaweI have emailed Crytek about the Linux version of CryEngine, no reply yet, doubt I will get one from them.
I've been trying to contact them for several months asking for comment on whether the position was filled and the state of possible Linux support for current/future CryEngine versions, but haven't as yet gotten any response.

Toki Tori 2+, Two Tribes and Linux
22 Jan 2014 at 7:02 am UTC

Quoting: Quote from stanI don’t understand why they aren’t simply making their games for Windows and Linux at the same time. There really isn’t any need to wait 6 months and hire someone to port to Linux…
Whilst the Toki Tori 2+ Linux port was finished by Ed "urkle" Rudd, it was started internally [External Link] by Marco Bouterse.

During development, there's a lot of money and time pressure to get things done. Often this is what keeps the scope of a project in check and makes sure that something eventually gets released. With Linux being out of the comfort zone for many devs, it's easy to put it off and plan to come back to it after release once the core development effort has died down and there's potentially some cash flow from it to fall back on.

Unfortunately, it ends up being more work when done that way. Baby steps though. With Two Tribes using the Toki Tori 2+ engine for their next title, I imagine that Linux support won't be a big effort for them and perhaps if we can show enough support, maybe we'll be able to convince them to get close to a simultaneous launch ^_^

urkle (the fellow who finished the Linux port after the studio closed and reopened) has posted in that thread saying that he's looking into it, so fingers crossed there.

Quoting: Quote from HadBabitsI've never found their games particularly engaging for some reason. Nevertheless, I'm sorry to hear that they're having trouble.
I really enjoy RUSH. It plays a little like a stylised 3D lemmings - a type of fun strategic puzzler that we don't see much of these days.

I found Toki Tori's difficulty engaging for a while, but Toki Tori 2's feel of adventure/exploration has grabbed me in a way that that its predecessor didn't.

Linux Game Sales Statistics From Multiple Developers

Quoting: Quote from tigerTo be fair, I don't own any of those games because IMHO they are bad. Obviously they will have bad sales on linux.
To a degree, that's going to be personal taste. The developers who've responded to this article are by no means all of those who support Linux - which developers would you like to hear from?

Linux Game Sales Statistics From Multiple Developers
21 Jan 2014 at 2:37 am UTC

Quoting: Quote from Maquis196I'd love to hear from Paradox Interactive on numbers.
Keep an eye out - Paradox are intending to share stuff very soon [External Link].

Quoting: Quote from RadegastI'd be really interested in what Frozenbyte have to say about their linux sales.
I reached out to them on Liam's behalf over the weekend, but haven't heard back yet. When we had them on SteamLUG Cast last year, we were told that Linux had outsold Mac [External Link] for them on Steam.

I was surprised by the figures in this article. Aside from Wolfire, I wasn't aware of a developer with a decent commitment to Linux support who had had higher Mac than Linux sales.

Most of the developers that I regularly interact with have talked about numbers in excess of 10% for Linux users, and those who didn't had either actively done something which (justifiably or otherwise) didn't sit well with the Linux gaming community (such as PuppyGames pulling out of Desura, or Garry's cheeky jibes) or just didn't have Linux versions of their games available to buy outside of special promotions.

I'm hoping that a follow up to this article with responses from more developers will reveal a different landscape, but even the figures here do highlight that supporting Linux gaming is commercially viable, and that's really positive.
