SteamOS-like Linux package Bazzite 2.0 is out now for Steam Deck and desktop
9 Nov 2023 at 11:28 pm UTC

I installed it on an asus with ryzen apu mini PC, and it's there to stay. Only thing that is not working as I expected is that sometimes the updates inside steamOS stay at 99%. On Chimera that part worked a bit better. Switching from game mode to desktop is fast, and can be used as a daily driver.

The worst thing, were some troubles trying to install in other devices, which they also state on their website:

Installer issues from upstream still plague the user experience unfortunately.
However, things are looking up, so perhaps in the near future this will not be an issue anymore.
Post-installation, you should be able to use Bazzite on your device smoothly, but please let us know if you experience any issues.

On a NVIDIA second hand mini gaming PC (the one I used before the steamdeck) it doesn't boot at all, and on my latptop it installs but breaks at the end. Same for both Fedora Linux immutable versions (Kinoite & Silverblue) which Bazzite is based on.

Valve reveals Steam Deck OLED for November 16th

I was defininatly not expecting this right now. The poor color saturation was my biggest gripe with the deck, even more than the small(er) screen. Ori and the Blind Forest [External Link] was bearable, but playing !Gris [External Link] was definately not the same as on other screens at all.

Another small change:

45W Power supply with 2.5m cable

The other version had a 1.5m cable that was a bit to short. Most of the time I ended up using my lenovo laptop usb-c charger instead.

The wifi 6 is another thing that will make this device live long and prosper, as even as a plain minipc it already outperformed all other minipcs at their pricepoint. So It's a welcome update indeed!

I wonder how much will the 1st gen be worth on second hand markets...?

Zombie survival in your city – Infection Free Zone

Playing the previous dev's 112 operator, which also used real world data was a game changer: oth in terms of immersion, and challenges (streets with dead ends). So I look very much forward for this one too.

DREAMM emulator for classic LucasArts games v2.1 out with Linux support

So many found memories of Indiana Jones and His Desktop Adventures and Star Wars: Yoda Stories

Quoting: GeamanduraI don't get it. If it's just a "low level emulation", then why not just use Dosbox instead, which is a low level emulation? It would sound that this project only implements the subset of Dosbox which is needed at runtime by these games.
These two games for example were full windows GUI shareware games, that complety got broken on the Win95/98 to WinXP upgrade.

That and Clik n Play games :(

JSAUX launch their Steam Deck RGB backplate and RGB Docking Station

What I find most curious here is SteamOS had initially support for RGB colors. I got one 2nd hand Alienware, one of the first Steam Machines, put Chimera (then GamerOS) on it and was surprised when I saw the option inside steam big picture to select the colors of the hardware case!

The glowing eyes were cool. Everything else with that machine was a bad experience though.

New Stars is a slimmed down quicker Stellaris-like strategy sim

Bummer... I too had hopes it was a reboot of the old Stars!

Heroic Games Launcher 2.8.0 adds a DLC manager for Epic Games, side-loading browser apps

Heroic was my main launcher for running MTG Arena on the deck, but now that it finally launched on steam, I haven't touched it anymore... maybe after I clear my steam backlog...

The new System Shock remake demo runs surprisingly well on Steam Deck
9 Feb 2023 at 9:02 pm UTC

Nice video Liam, I have to try it then. Combat does indeed look sloppy, and all those attempts to climb a box to destroy a camera... Is the VR mode combat more satisfying?

That is a bit worrying since they also intend to remaster System Shock 2.

But at least the sound design seems great, love those slow bulk doors opening and closing.

These were the most popular Steam Deck games for January 2023

Lately I've been playing HOMM3 HD Edition [External Link]. Yes the GOG version is better, but I never played the original campaign and it was cheap on the Steam summer sale, so it's just click n play now.

Then I even finished Paradise Killer [External Link]. It took too much for me to play this game, it's one of those gems I would have never bought because of the screenshots: I mistook it for just a visual novel . What a ride! Sound design, bizarre setting, mix of genres, not-so-lazy-as-it-first-seemed-lofi-retro-art. Even the platforming felt good (you would not be punished by falling for example). Can't recommend it enough. It has an unique experience as the cult classic Pathologic [External Link] and yet is so different still.

Other random played games: for thrill Redout [External Link], for chill Grand Mountain Adventure [External Link] and Hokko Life [External Link].

Finally I'm also play-testing a bit of the last alpha test build of KeeperRL [External Link] which is adding full deck support.

Steam Deck thoughts a year later

Quoting: CatKillerIt's a lot better than gaming on a laptop. Like, a hell of a lot better.

This!

Quoting: denyasisI'm not 100% convinced I want one though. I get the fun and confidence of it replacing a laptop for less demanding games, but what is your all's thoughts on the more "cinematic" route of games? I'm thinking some FPS's or stuff like The Witcher or Cp2077. Does it have the same feel as playing it on a nice monitor and nice sound?
Also even if you have a gaming desktop but its old, you might find the deck playing games (in 1280px) that your main rig would struggle at the standard resolution. The 1280x800 in the little deck screen actually DOES look good (biggest exception maybe color intensive games like GRIS). For example Cp2077 I played on Stadia before (RIP), now on my PC away from the TV (and router) I can only play with Nvidea Geforce with the occasional streaming glitches and (SURPRISE) on the deck.

Bottom line, I was many times almost jumping to get a switch to play (and buy again) some indies. Then I actually switched ideas (pun intended) and got a ryzen mini pc with steamOS (Chimera) on the TV to leverage the humble bundle gaming backlog. When Steam Deck appeared I instantly got it once I heard about it since it was best of both worlds, and to my surprise I can play AAA games on it, and they look good!! It blew away all expectations.

ADDED: More on topic, and unless you have like 3 screens, I would argue that some games are more immersive with it than on desktop. Ex: first person racing Redout or flying space sims like Everspace (even with a tiny UI).
