Quoting: KlaasI've read so much about troubles with quality of the Joy-Cons, but to be fair poor build quality seems to be everywhere. Logitech has had trouble with the quality of the micro switches for the buttons for a long time and they've stopped using optical mouse wheels and have switched to cheap encoders (OT: encoders are always a huge pain – the biggest German electronics compendium has a very long article for workarounds).
It's true that poor build-quality is everywhere nowadays, but the Joy-Cons are of unusually poor-quality - going on my own experience, you'll get anything between 6 to 18 months of gentle use out of a brand new one*, and in the UK while I was a Switch owner you had to pay the cost of a new controller to get them repaired. I believe this has changed now, however.

*I'm a woman, though, so I don't know how well these things last in rougher hands. I've seen reviews suggesting that it may be as little as three months in such cases.

I learned to repair them myself (to their credit, they're designed to be very easy to repair), but there came a point where, on top of everything else that I mentioned, I ended up asking myself why an end-user should have to repair carefully-used almost-new products constantly.
Honestly, stuff like that makes me sad to hear, regardless of my feelings towards Nintendo today. My experience growing up with Nintendo handhelds was they they were extremely durable and reliable; even the original "phat" DS could withstand a drop on a concrete driveway without it breaking a sweat. And as far as console were concerned, the GameCube had long been my gold standard for reliability; I never had a single problem with it. The only other console I have that can match it in the regard is my PS3 Slim. My JP Dreamcast is pretty old as well and runs good...but I only acquired it last year, and don't know its entire history prior to my obtaining it. Had fun playing Sakura Wars 2-4 on it though!

Apologies for the rambling.

I grew up with Nintendo starting with the N64. Back in the mid-2010's, during the Wii U's life, I suddenly found myself losing interest in them. To this day, I find it difficult to play most Nintendo games, with titles like Ocarina of Time being one of the few exceptions. That's a game I just can't bring myself to hate, as it was my favorite game ever for the longest time.

That said, I never bought a Switch, and never will. I'm very disappointed in Nintendo right now, and I have no regret over leaving them behind.

Additionally, there's one other thing I discovered as an adult, particularly after getting into emulation. I didn't get to really appreciate them back in their heyday, but now I see...that SEGA was better.

Unless it's a noticeable boost from my RX 6600 (non-XT), then I don't see myself buying it.

Seconding this. My Pixel 7 (and Pixel Watch) have AMOLED displays, and it's not bad, I have to say. I'd be open to something like that for the Deck.

Is this for real? You do know that this is designed to kill people, not in a cs-fashion but for real. And all with the currently f'ed up narrative and politics, you are cracking jokes with it.

I can not believe this, what a shame.
I take no pleasure in the death of human beings, but I have no sympathy for invaders; especially those who commit war crimes.

Flathub app store for Linux and Steam Deck gets overhauled

Cool. I love Flatpak. My preferred way to install programs on desktop Linux these days, no doubt.

The specs suggest to me that battery life is likely to be atrocious.

People will disagree with me, but I think Valve nailed the best compromise for a handheld PC with the Steam Deck's specs. 720p and 60hz is, IMO, what you want. 720p looks great on a screen designed for it, and 60fps is still plenty smooth; especially for someone who grew up with consoles, like me. At a $400 price tag with an additional $40-50 dollar for a 512GB SSD upgrade, the price-to-performance ratio is excellent.

You want more power? You'll have to pay for it; literally and figuratively.

Ubuntu 23.04 'Lunar Lobster' Beta released

I don't like some of the decisions Canonical has taken, like requiring their flavors to drop Flatpak and only push Snaps.

But Ubuntu is still, IMO, an excellent distribution alongside its flavors. Kubuntu is still my daily driver on my desktop due to my preference for KDE and Plasma, and I am also a fan of Xubuntu.

Due to various reasons, I ended up on 22.10 on my desktop, so I will be making the upgrade to 23.04. I am considering staying on point releases going forward, as they've been pretty stable during the periods I've used them, and point releases offer a nice middle ground between LTS and rolling distros.

GNOME 44 is out now finally adding thumbnails to the file picker

Apps will need to use GTK4 though, so hopefully plenty will.
Ouch, IIRC Firefox still uses gtk3.
I don't think this is an issue if you use something like the Firefox Flatpak, which uses. I know that, ever since I switched to the Flatpak, Firefox has always used the KDE file picker OOTB without me needing to do anything; unlike when I used the .deb package.

Honestly, the file picker is one of the reasons I left GTK behind for KDE/Qt. I was never a big GNOME user, but I was/am a fan of Xfce (Xubuntu); the lack of thumbnails in the file picker always bugged me.
