System76 desktop environment COSMIC alpha now available to try
8 Aug 2024 at 4:44 pm UTC

This looks nice but I have to say I'm pretty bummed that this does not look nearly as modular as I had initially hoped. I'm not really interested in a desktop environment, but I do want a window manager and the current options are less than ideal for various reasons (nvidia re wayland having been a huge pain in the ass). I would be happy to use this if I could strip it down to basically just be a window manager but it's not really looking like it'll quite do that without elaborate modification.

Valve fixes up the new Riven from Cyan Worlds videos on Linux / Steam Deck

I played the entire game before the fix on proton experimental and did not notice any issues whatsoever.

Magnificent chunky shooter Selaco gets a 'MEGA' update

At first I must admit I was a *little* disappointed with this game because I (completely unjustifiably) expected it to be a boomer shooter despite having watched videos showing exactly what it is (I guess my expectations around gzdoom were so strong they overrode the evidence of my own eyes).

However once I (quickly) got over that... this game is amazing. Basically doom and system shock and deus ex at the same time and pretty much as good as that sounds. Well on its way to being one of my top few favorite FPS of all time.

NVIDIA driver 555.58 released as stable bringing Wayland Explicit Sync

Well, we are getting very close to the day of reckoning where I have to sit down on my secondary computer and bang my head against the wall until I get wayland working once and for all. Nvidia has been a gigantic headache. KDE has worked every time I've tried it, but nothing else does, in particular I need either the qtile or hyprland window managers to work (maybe river?). Will probably wait for linux 6.10 full release plus 555 drivers to land on manjaro mainline and then let the pain begin.

The way I see it, nvidia owes me my work salary computed per hour, multiplied by however many (many) hours it takes me to finally get it working reliably.

X4: Foundations Update 7.00 and X4: Timelines DLC are out now

I've been a huge fan of X since I discovered X3 in 2006 and it completely blew my mind. I do however understand why lots of people don't like it: it takes like 100 hours to get to the "core" gameplay lol.

I think X4 is the best one yet and the improvements have been great, but I do wish they could get some of the more "fun" parts like space combat to feel less terrible. Hopefully some improvements in this update? (downloaded, will get to play this weekend)

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora now on Steam, broken for Steam Deck and Desktop Linux

In my mind Ubisoft is pretty much the worst publisher. It's really the only publisher for which, when I see it's them, I just ignore the game. I don't even necessarily do that for EA.

System76 refresh the Adder WS laptop, plus COSMIC desktop Alpha in May

I use window managers and normally have zero interest in desktops, but a lot of what I have seen of COSMIC makes it look like I can actually just use it as a window manager. That makes me interested, because Wayland + nvidia is still a nightmare that I would like somebody to solve for me (or better yet, if AMD can manage to release competitive graphics cards this year I will ditch nvidia).

Steam Deck hits over 14,000 games rated Playable or Verified

I still wish steam would have another badge rather than "unsupported" for games which work perfectly fine on linux more generally. I can't tell you how many "unsupported" games I've played without any issue whatsoever. Miraculously the situation is *way better* than the number of "verified" and "playable" games would indicate.

Yuzu agrees to pay Nintendo $2.4 million and will entirely shut down (Citra for 3DS too)

Quoting: cozThere's no unfairness or injustice here. Nintendo does have deep pockets and throws its weight around but in this case there was no abuse. Even the Electronic Frontier Foundation calls reverse engineering protection systems "legally risky". Businesses have been created around protecting game developers against Switch emulation. You don't pay someone to protect you unless you expect to lose sales, which makes obvious that harm has been done.
The monopolist nintendo might lose some sales to people that make a bit of money by reverse engineering nintendo's product, using their own time and effort and expertise, in order to free users from the hardware prison that nintendo feels is necessary maximize its profits. Then, nintendo uses the state and courts as useful idiots to enforce their hardware-prison business model at gunpoint.

Absolutely infuriating, but at least there's nothing nintendo can actually do about it, beyond whatever DRM crap they've already implemented.
