Path of Exile 2 now in Early Access and it works on Steam Deck / Linux

For those of you playing the game: how are you all liking it? I'm finding it extremely difficult, I keep getting surrounded and can't move (you can't dodge or walk through enemies, so surrounded = stuck in place) and dying. I've probably died 50 or so times LOL

Quoting: CaldathrasI dislike always-online, multiplayer games any way, especially those with subscriptions or micro-transactions. If you like 'em, enjoy ...
  • if you wait until after the EA, it's totally free

  • it's only multiplayer if you want it to be, it can be 100% single player only (solo self found)

  • there are no subscriptions

  • there is mtx but totally optional, and that's only to support the devs/game since, again, it's 100% free

so if only online is your only complaint, I can understand that, and there are other arpgs out there without this (last epoch) but I would suggest giving it a try! It's a really fun game!

Quoting: enigmaxg28 PCI-E Gen 5 drives in a RAID setup
excuse me wtf?

and looking past whatever insanity this statement is, ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yes big speedy storage is dirt cheap and has been for AGES. You can get a 1tb gen4 drive right now for $50-60 if you pick up a sale. That is big, and speedy, and cheap. That's about the cost of a single aaa game these days.

I have a few others things to say as well, getting some stuff off my chest!

Quoting: CyrilLiam, like many people here, you have a monster of a PC, of course you don't care about snaps in performance aspects.
Liam does have a good computer (same specs I have) but I built my pc in 2020, which is coming up on 5 years old pretty soon. The specs he and I are running are nowhere near top of the line. Saying he doesn't care about performance on his system isn't fair at all. And it doesn't even really make sense. Of course he cares about performance, we all do.

Quoting: CaldathrasI like Pop!_OS because its semi-rolling nature and also because it is Ubuntu-based.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why ubuntu based distros use ubuntu as their base instead of straight debian (which ubuntu itself is based off of) ...? Mint offers a debian based option. I wonder why Pop doesn't? Seems forking a fork would be a development nightmare wouldn't it?

Quoting: Mountain ManRuns well on the Steam Deck, although it's surprisingly resource intensive. I had to leave the CPU and GPU speeds set to max or the game would chug. I guess there's a lot of data being crunched under the hood.
I've just barely even scratched the surface, but the depth of the simulation (you can do almost anything you can imagine) is supposedly just off the charts. I was reading some comment about how someone found a "spray a brain" item and accidentally used it on a piece of wall and now he has a nearly invincible pet but it's stupid as shit LOLOLOL. I can only imagine if the simulation running under the hood is cranking out insane possibilities, this could be why it's so intensive?

I finally was able to get in and play some today, and I'm really liking it! Of course I'm only level 4 lolol so I have zero clue about much of anything, but the visual and audio is really good, the animations are excellent and feel weighty (my biggest complaint about last epoch), and the voice acting is REALLY good! I'm a bit confused about the skill gems system but I'll figure it out over time.

I've tried the wizard class and the crossbow class and I like the wizard a lot more. Crossbow class felt strange with having to swap ammo types, but maybe that's just because I've never played a class like that before. Could be fun to try and master it. I don't like melee whatsoever, so I'll skip the monk/warrier. I'll give the ranger a go after a while too to see how that is.

So many good games releasing, omg........

edit:
one thing that I REALLY miss (and hoping they'll add it through EA) is a death log. I've been killed a few times and like every single arpg ever made, it's often hard to tell what did it. Physical, elemental, dot, etc etc etc. The few arpgs that have this (I think grim dawn and last epoch do? Can't remember) help so much to build defenses. Which at the end of the day is really all that matters in these games. Glass cannons suck so much. Having a lot of fun though!

Quoting: Mountain ManI can't believe there are people paying $30 for a game that will eventually be released for free.
There will almost certainly be new stash tabs or various micro transactions that'll make the game better, and the early access bundle comes with 300 of those coins to do just that, which is actually their current going rate for the coins outside of the bundle. So, in a sense, if you're going to get into POE2 you're going to need to spend this money at some time anyway.
Exactly. Plus I want to support GGG because they are great devs, so I'm okay paying the $30 now and getting the tabs and whatever else later on for free.

I think I'm going to give up trying for tonight. I bought it on steam, but wasn't aware I needed to link accounts, I figured I could just login to the poe servers with my normal poe account, nope. You need to link them together, but the email server is on fire and won't send any linking emails. So .....

Back to Caves of Qud for me!

Quoting: RFSharpeI have had a desire to play this game for years. I think... "I can do this." I then go to the fantastically informative Caves of Qud Wiki [External Link]. At this point, I am still thinking "I know I can play this game! Where should I begin?" I go to random page, such as Default Controls Map [External Link]. It is then that I realize that I am much too intellectually challenged to play this game.
LOL yes it can be a little daunting. It's just so different from almost anything else.

I vote for reading nothing at all about anything on any wiki or anywhere else, do the tutorial just to get the UI and controls understood, and just .... go somewhere! just start exploring.

That's what I'm doing now and having a blast. I'm currently in a cave fighting spiders with a sympathetic merchant. I keep aggroing the spiders and then dragging them back to the merchant who shoots them. Then I heal up and repeat. LOL. I'm about out of food though and I haven't come across any vendors selling it out in the wilds so I will have to find out how to make my own food soon I guess.

YES I've been waiting for you to post about this game!!!!!!!!! This has been highest on my wishlist for a while now since trying it out a while back and then deciding to wait for 1.0. I absolutely LOVE this game.

I would like to focus on this one bit you mentioned though:

Thankfully there's multiple game modes, so you can make it a bit more adventure-like and less punishing
This is so important! Using these settings you can make the game into a regular ol rpg. You can save in any settlement and reload your character if you die from any number of hilarious deaths (lol). You can also make the game into just exploration with almost no combat if you want, just to run around and see what's up. And of course there's the standard "rogue" mode of permadeath, but that's not the only way!

The game's interface is a delight, the lore and writing is incredible, and as you mentioned, the detail is just off the charts. I just can't say enough good things. Highly highly recommended.

Valve may be working on a new kind of Steam Machine

I'm not in the market for anything like this, as I just use my htpc to also double as a living room gaming computer, but I really do hope they can pull off a steam machine comeback!!
