Some fresh Steam Deck Verified games to jump into for December 13th

What have you been playing recently?
This week so far, it's been;

A game that a relative and I used to play when I visited their place, B.C. Bill (Commodore 64 version) [External Link] (Proton), which I was delighted to find had been re-released in emulator-wrapped form on Steam this year.

Bomberman 64: The Second Attack! [External Link] (Nintendo 64), via RetroDECK [External Link], a fun-but-flawed game which was criminally overlooked in its day, which nonetheless made an enormous contribution to the series' worldbuilding and lore.

The always-relaxing Placid Plastic Duck Simulator [External Link] (Proton), this time in the winter-themed "Quacking the Ice" pool, which has some exclusive ducks; I'm eagerly awaiting the inevitable Christmas event, which should bring in some festive ones, too.

Super Bomberman R 2 [External Link] (Proton), in which I'm currently enjoying the utterly chaotic 16-player Standard battle-mode, as it works around a current issue with the AI-players being as dumb as a stump by making up for it with complete madness!

And last but not least, Zool Redimensioned [External Link] (Proton), which really is an excellent remake/retelling of the first game; I'm still hoping that they'll make good on this game's hint at a Zool 3, sometime soon!

Fortnite on Linux / Steam Deck? Not until 'tens of millions of users'

Quoting: gradyvuckovicI'm sure he'll have some other arbitrary bullshit excuse when Steam Deck has 20m+ users.
You're quite right, he will. As a Nintendo expatriate, this all looks awfully familiar: It's exactly the same PR scheme to encourage people to port-beg on social-media, thus get them to do free marketing at no cost to the company.

Don't fall for it, anybody.

Quoting: bisbyxDid everyone see the new Rocket League racing mode? And by that, I mean the new racing mini-game inside Fortnite. Fortnite is no longer a game, and is now a gaming ecosystem of its own.
Did you see the bug-fugly Lego Fortnite? It's Lego assets dumped into realistic-looking vistas, which completely defeats the point of it being Lego.

Clearly, Epic hired This Man [External Link]. (Which, as we all know, is a problem [External Link]. )

Fanatical has some great bundles going right now you don't want to miss

I have to throw in a recommendation for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, here. Paired with another game, it's an absolute steal at that price! (Though, does that mean that you'll then need Mr. Wright to defend you...?)

Quoting: whizseLet us know if you need any help getting the training wheels off!
Quoting: StoneColdSpiderOh shes had plenty of training from an old Steam Grandmaster.........
Doesn't seem so long ago that I was all like "What the hell's with all the stickers and cards? What is this, even?", haha!

Quoting: basedThere's something special about buying bunch of awesome games on great discount and installing them right before xmas eve, nothing else quite like it for me.
Y'know, that's something that I haven't actually thought to do yet! I started using Steam on December 30th 2021, so I totally missed Christmas Eve that time, and just didn't think of it last year.

Honestly, the sales remind me (even more than Steam usually does) of my early days with gaming, which were spent with a Commodore 64C in the early 1990s - a time when the most you'd typically pay for a game was £3.99, with £9.99 considered to be a super-expensive "full-price" title. Granted, some of those were budget re-releases, but there were still plenty of new titles as well. Good times.

Some fun ones lined up here, and I'm really looking forward to the Winter Sale! The winter one a couple of years ago was the first-ever Steam sale I witnessed, so it's starting to become a bit of a nostalgic thing, now - my account's not quite two years old yet.

That said, I wonder if the criteria for the Dinos vs. Robots Fest might be slightly too strict to let me find everything that I'd be looking for; Sometimes, I want more robot games just "because robots" rather than for any deeper reason, but apparently that's a no-go for this one.

SIGIL II from John Romero out now for classic DOOM

I only got to experience Doom for the first time within the last year (the Steam Deck proved to be the most suitable hardware for managing my first-person motion-sickness ), and I loved it*. Just in time for the 30th anniversary, too - better late than never!

*I've even ended up with a little collection of Doom stuff, already;

Happy 30th Anniversary, Doom!

So what the heck is an 'indie game' nowadays anyway?
11 Dec 2023 at 3:21 am UTC

Quoting: s01itudeI dislike Geoff for many reasons and this is just another reason. He's actually in a position where he could (at least for his very large corner) create a definition of it and yet when he's put on the spot he basically just says every game is an indie game.
And of course, Best Debut Indie Game went to a game published by a large publisher, which wasn't even the devs' debut-game (even the Steam page for it lists their past works).

Humble brings back popular bundles for a limited time like Must-Play Metroidvanias

Quoting: fagnerlnIf someone has a Bloodstained key leftover and don't care of giving away to some random dude on the internet, let me know! 🤣
If it's any help, Bloodstained is currently one of the options in Fanatical's Prestige Collection - Winter Special 2023 Build Your Own Bundle [External Link] right now, too.

SEGA tease new Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Crazy Taxi

Quoting: ssj17vegetaOn a lighter note, that goofy "Sega!" scream at the very end of the video always cracks me up. The only time I've heard it used was in Sonic 3D Blast's intro, on Megadrive/Genesis.
They once made a Sonic plush toy which did that weird "Sega!" scream when you pressed his belly (it was manufactured by Treasures, Inc. in 1997* and was only available in the US, though they did crop up in import stores elsewhere). I have no idea why anybody thought that was a good idea.

*Collecting gaming merch is my other related hobby (though I don't have one of these - I just know of it). I don't think that this company did much gaming stuff other than that, though - what a weird thing to have on their record!

Quoting: AdamRHargreavesWhilst the ROG Ally has demo units in nearly every electrical store going..,,

Ah well, I shall just continue loading the steam deck store page on any demo unit I see!
Hahaha! Good man!
