Microsoft completes takeover of Activision Blizzard as UK CMA approves new deal

Quoting: 14I've gotten tired of the news, so I'm glad it's over. Do I like that it happened? No. Did I like what Activision Blizzard was before the takeover? No. So, even though I think it's bad news... kinda meh for me.
This is how I feel too. I don't like the industry consolidation, I don't like Microsoft throwing its billions around, I don't care about the "but Sony" argument, but most of all I'm tired of thinking about it and especially reading about it. News media falling over themselves to write on it, the endless for-and-agaonst arguments...
Very disappointed the purchase completed, but glad to move on from this anyway.

Building a Retro Linux Gaming Computer Part 32: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

I really love this series! Some like reading about repairing old muscle cars; I like reading about repairing period accurate 90s Linux desktops. Keep up the good work please, I need more!

Get highly rated modern platformers like A Hat in Time in this bundle

I bought A Hat In Time for my wife, who loved it so we bought the DLCs which were also good. Then I bought the physical cart for Switch so I could share the game with her family. Then I bought the game+DLC+OST package on Steam for myself since I enjoyed it so much. It's a really great game, and the Steam Workshop mods are fun to use (Half-Life crowbar!) And at least on Steam Deck, you can install new mods from the workshop while playing the game! Amazing!

I've been playing The Outer Wilds, I deeply regret sleeping on this in my backlog for such a long time, it's been a breath of fresh air to play after all the samey stuff and usual suspects. Great exploration, fun puzzles to solve, great physics... The way the game implements a whole solar system with Newtonian physics, solar shadows, rotating and revolving planets, and the jetpack, it's just a delight to play this. It plays quite well at 40fps for >2hrs playtime, or plugged in at 60fps but expect dips to 30 when NPCs are around (which is rare).

GOG reveal some stats on how they're doing

I make an effort to buy at least a few games every year from GOG to support their mission, usually during their seasonal sales. Proton makes it easy to run their games via Heroic or Steam, and everything plays nicely on Steam Deck. Like everyone else I wish they'd devote some resources to making Galaxy more friendly on Linux devices, even if it meant simply making it easier to run via Proton. But with a profit of just $1M, I can see why they don't want to invest time and money into that.

MangoHud performance overlay gets a few needed fixes in v0.6.9-1

Thank you Liam for posting your template! If this works on Steam Deck, you should post this to the subreddit as people ask all the time how to customize their overlay hud.

Asus announce the ROG Ally gaming handheld

I'm looking forward to this - its attractive, lightweight, quiet, fast, 120hz, etc. Great upsides. And yet, I probably won't buy one as I expect it will be $1500, and most crucially of all it lacks trackpads!

Valve doesn't need much to make a Steam Deck 2 a huge success

I find a lot of these Steam Deck 2 wishlists lack consistency, are hopelessly unrealistic, and most of them are just too early. This isn't a smartphone seeing annual revisions, nor is it a locked-down walled-garden console where the manufacturer has total system/UI control. I think when SD2 does come out we will see an awful lot of disappointment from the community where they decry the lack of Killer-But-Totally-Necessary Feature (120hz, VRR, 32gb, 1920x1200, OLED, IPS, removable controllers, etc).
Keep your expectations in check guys: moving from RDNA2 to 3 (or 4) but moving resolution up to 1200 will result in no performance gains and hang-wringing about playing at 800p (but then you're missing out on 1200 pixel density!). Adding more battery will make the device heavier. Adding OLED won't be possible at "reasonable" prices (Valve doesn't move Nintendo unit quantities).
I'd prefer they wait until 2024, announce a refresh/2.0, release in 2025. Problem is then any competitor has a spec target to match/beat at a lower price.
