Steam purchases now clearly state you're just getting a license not ownership

Quoting: ToddLAll this license talk makes me miss the days of playing games without worrying about losing access to them. I know GOG exist but I'm thinking more in terms of the physical media days in the PS2 era and before that didn't require network access to authenticate a license to play.
Says the naive young one who never lost the paper cover with the printed cd-key for a PC game, so never had to download a trojan-infested keygen.exe to replay their owned PC Games in the original midia, after a yearly reformatting of Windows.
Actually, I never had issues with losing the CD keys on the PC games I bought back then and didn't need a keygen file at all. Also, I play games on consoles from NES to the current systems, but I just remember how it was back in the days where you didn't have to think about network connections and licenses to play a game when you bought it on cartridge, CD and DVD until the PS3/Xbox 360 came along and changed it for the worse.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered announced by Aspyr for 2025
11 Oct 2024 at 10:04 pm UTC

It's cool that they're continuing to do the remastered version of Tomb Raider 4-6 and I only played The Last Revelation on the PS1 back then but nothing really stood out from that one. By the time Chronicles and Angel of Darkness came out, I was out of gaming for a long period of time.

At least I remembered how horrible Angel of Darkness was on the PS2 when I watching a family member play it. Back then, those game magazines were hyping it up because Edios tried to make it like Metal Gear with the stealth elements and some other game mechanics that ended up not working very well.

Steam Deck officially comes to Australia in November

Quoting: Leahi84I don't have a Steam deck myself as I'm not a fan of portable gaming at all (Don't even play games on my Pixel phone) and don't want to play games unless its on my PC, but I'm glad for my nephew who hasn't been able to get one down there yet.
Most of my usage has been on the sofa or in bed - you don't have to take it outside for it to be useful.
Another nice feature is that you can hook it up to the TV using any dock (including Valve's own) or USB-C attachment without worrying about some weird proprietary connector like the Switch.

Halo will now be built on Unreal Engine 5, 343 Industries rebrands to Halo Studios

Quoting: Doktor-MandrakeIt's saddening to see more and more developers ditch their in-house engine for unreal engine
This will make it easier for them to port it over to Playstation if and when they do it because they've already released Grounded and Sea of Thieves on their platform. With the over $500 million dollars they spent to make Halo Infinite with their own engine, they probably saw the difficulties that people were having with maintaining and getting new people aboard to learn how to use and/or develop it.

From the many articles I've read about the game, there are many features to this day that players want but Halo Studios still hasn't delivered and seemed to priority something else instead like the upcoming 3rd person mode.

China continues rising on the Steam Survey with Linux now at 1.87%

Quoting: pbPersonally I find this fascinating that China is so Windows-centric.
Not for long. In the next 1-2 years, the Chinese will significantly completely abandon Windows (even pirated versions will be cut) and switch to HarmonyOS [External Link].

They write [External Link] that its microkernel is 3 times more efficient than Linux. Other sources also say that it will be possible to launch Steam + native streaming of games on DX12.2
Even if the HarmonyOS switch becomes a thing, many of them will still use Windows because it has the software they need to use for their gaming, productivity and anything else that Linux doesn't have for them. Also, Windows 10 and 11 keys are cheap enough to activate it if you go to the keyshops to buy it.

Nintendo Switch emulator Ryujinx gets shut down

Quoting: robvvI recently noticed that the suyu gitlab repo has been closed, too. Computers are supposed to be learning and creative tools, and instead we have this walled-garden situation created by greedy companies. Maybe devs should host their repos in countries that are not too bothered about what Nintendo says...
Suyu is still there guys: https://git.suyu.dev/suyu/suyu [External Link]
The Gitlab one was taken down months ago: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/03/gitlab-takes-down-nintendo-switch-emulator-suyu-due-to-the-dmca/
It's only a matter of time before Suyu gets shutdown because they continue to use code from Yuzu that Nintendo now owns and the people on Youtube and elsewhere that keep showing off that they can play Switch games on other hardware using Suyu, which will get Nintendo's attention real quickly.

Epic Games reduce their cut for Unreal Engine games for same-day Epic Store launches
2 Oct 2024 at 5:25 am UTC

Quoting: SchattenspiegelWait, that Freeware site is actually selling games?
Cool, never noticed. Once I played through the 450 or so Windows only titles they gave me for free, that I did not have time to touch, yet, I might give it a try. Do they offer proton integration, controller remapping and native Linux support for the games they actually sell like other stores do?
The only thing that they did offer at the time was coupons that made games cheaper but that's still not enough to get people to care about buying game on their store. Also, their launcher sucks anyways and even though I've gotten it setup on the Steam Deck, I only use it when I feel like it, which is rare. I only collect their free games they offer every Thursday and that's about it.

Nintendo Switch emulator Ryujinx gets shut down

Can't say any of this is surprising coming from Nintendo, the same company that hates emulation more than anyone I've ever seen in video games. They would rather wish emulation didn't exist so that you're forced to buy their underpowered hardware and charge you up the butt for their overrated first party games, imo.

Quoting: Talon1024I don't have a Switch, but I've heard Nintendo is now making their beloved retro classics only available through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. In addition, console game developers generally have to re-release their games for each new console generation, due to the backwards incompatibility.
They started putting up retro classics on the Nintendo Switch Online subscription the moment they stopped supporting the Virtual Console, which is a joke because you only get to play them for a short time before they remove them from the library and these games are already out there to download if you wanted to emulate them from their respective systems. Now, some are saying Nintendo are going to allow backward compatibility with Switch 2 and even if it is true, don't be surprise if any of the Yuzu code was used to enhance those games because they don't know how to make good emulators.

Quoting: WMan22There is no good argument in favor of removing emulators from existence. If you approve of this, I literally see you as no better than people who burned books under fascist regimes.
Unfortunately, their fanbase are approving of these emulator removals and anything that they think harms Nintendo. Good thing I don't let some company like Nintendo influence my gaming and I'm glad to never pay a dime for their crappy hardware and games ever again.

Valve (Steam) begin a direct collaboration with Arch Linux

Despite a lot of the discussion about the secure signing enclave, I'm just happy that Valve is continuing to make contributions to the Open Source community with this collaboration.
