Quoting: kuhpunktJust a random question. How do you guys pronounce TR1X when you read/say it? Tee Are One Axe? Tricks?
I would pronounce it as Trix (Tricks), like the name of the cereal here in the US. However, I don't know how anyone else would pronounce it.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyOn Mac, I suspect open source software is quite hard to run.
In general, it's a lot easier than Windows because it has a lot of the same libraries as Linux due to its *BSD heritage.
I was thinking more along the lines of just a bit of a pain to install because of Apple walled garden stuff, not so much not working or anything.
Oh, well in that case, not really! Installing open source software (or any kind of software, really) is pretty easy on macOS. Even installing homebrew is possible with a click (and a drag, and an OK prompt, and a right-click to Open it) or a one-line command. Same deal with, say, Krita. Just download the .DMG and go through a wizard. Most people don't use the App Store because it sucks for getting software anyway.

I actually think macOS is a pretty decent OS (with major caveats) and isn't much more locked down than Windows. In some ways, I think it's less limiting. It's all of Apple's other devices where that reputation is rightly deserved.
Don't forget that you can also use Macports if you want to install open source software and while it's not as simple as homebrew, it's not a bad tool to use if you set it up.

Battlefield V now broken on Steam Deck / Linux with EA anticheat live
6 Apr 2024 at 2:26 pm UTC

Quoting: theHoneyBadgerI heard a rumor today that Apex Legends will be getting this new AC within the next month or two, after the whole hacking debacle during the big competition they had recently. EAC has washed their hands of EA at this point, so the writing is basically on the wall.
If they do, then you can be sure that Battlefield 1 and 4 will eventually get it because there's no way they wouldn't add it for just Battlefield V and 2042 only. I guess no one should be surprised anymore when it comes to companies like EA using these crappy anticheats that breaks our enjoyment of their games on Steam Deck/Linux.

Yeah, you can't launch the game at all. It gives you a "Wine is not supported!" error.
Damn, that's very inconsiderate of them.
I had a feeling that was going to happen (which why I quickly finished the game before April 3rd) since this is the same approach as other kernel anticheats, where single player story modes are blocked from Steam Deck/Linux despite certain customers not planning to cheat or playing multiplayer online mode. If only the single player story mode didn't get hindered by an anticheat and should only be applied to those that go online only but these companies would rather lazily apply the all or nothing approach.

At this point, if you still want to play the game, you'll either have to install Windows or use a cloud service like Geforce Now whenever they update it on their end since it's offline at the moment.

Quoting: XpanderThe "sad" reality is that even those super deep kernel level anticheats don't help these days. Sooner or later something new is needed. There are so many hardware level AI based cheats around already that are basically undetectable by everything.. THere are even some Gaming Monitors that trying to come out with a AI assisted tech like seeing enemy characters as colored blobs or so on... Drawing aproximate locations by listening the game sounds etc... its gonna be nasty future for multiplayer games sadly.
The worse part of all of this is the fact that people have to cheat on these multiplayer games in the first place. It would've been nice if everyone played these multiplayer games without using cheats/mods so that these companies don't have to resort to using crappy anticheat programs that block Steam Deck/Linux users.

Good thing I didn't care about multiplayer and got the stories done before this stupid change happened . Weil, I guess it's time to do the same thing on Battlefield 1 before they decide to pull the trigger on this crappy anti-cheat for this one.

Quoting: CatKillerLegislators getting involved in what you can and can't include in your game, and how a company runs their online infrastructure years after the fact is going to get quite messy, with companies still pushing boundaries and finding edge cases.
I can't imagine legislators doing the right thing since they'll more like side with the game companies over consumers but I do agree with you about the messiness this will entail with their involvement.
