Seems the Valve Steam Deck has been impressing people with some hands-on time

Damn, why don't we already see a (real) Doom 2016/Eternal port? :D

No matter how good it runs with Proton. id Software, even if
not the same company anymore, had a tradition of Linux ports.
Now they're getting show cased a lot with Steam Deck.

Come on guys. Get us a port already.

Steam Machines were a 2013 thing ???

OMG. How time flies.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyOverall this is not a bad talk. One thing I notice though is that the "lessons learned" they're talking about are all fairly low-level. I mean like hardware, enabling software like Proton and stuff like that.

There is no mention of UI polish, availability of extra services like video streaming, or failures of marketing. I hope that's just because these are low-level-stuff kind of guys and not because none of those lessons were learned.
Yet, they "claim" the different categories of developers under one roof had significant positive impact.
Like Steam, infrastructure, middleware, game devs and hardware people.
This is to be proven though, I agree.

That led us down this path of Proton
Yeah, "down" seems fit for me...

Still excited for what will happen this time.
Let's also not forget that while Steam Machines were a failure, Proton wasn't available at that time and WINE was simply no match.

Quoting: pbWait, *additional* episodes? My heart skipped a beat before re-reading the sentence and noticing "the".
Damn. Thanks. I misread it in the very same way.
Just didn't notice it.

Was so pumped for some new content.

I still love the Half Life series to bits and play through them from time to time.
Would even love to get new story content from Valve with that old tech.
Ofc, I know, that's out of question.

Imho, the half life series has aged extremely well and I miss those kind of games.
Handcrafted single-player campaigns with a really good story.

Those plenty sandbox games with procedurally generated (infinite) levels or size
are just not my cup of tea. They highlight the total freedom with infinite possibilities -
yet, to me, it seems this is often just a cheap argument, because doing
handcrafted single-player campaigns and a good story is hard.
Too pricey and too hard for those many small indie devs.
Unfortunately, and I totally understand that.

Frozenbyte are now telling Linux users to use Proton, even for their older games

I'll leave this here.

German gaming news mag Gamestar has just updated an article with a direct response by Valve (PR),
which states that Steam Deck will support the entire Steam library (more or less).

Link to the article:

The comment with the original statement in English

Quoting: Kaci Aitchison Boyle (Valve PR)"Steam Deck is built to support the entire Steam Library. Some games may run better than others in the same ways in which some games play better with controllers than others. That said, many games won’t require added work from game developers to run well on Deck because of Proton, and we’re spending the time between now and launch working with devs on additional ways to optimize for Deck where needed."

It will be a maintenance and catch-up hell for Valve. No doubt.

Quoting: GuestI guess I should point out that Valve have never said anything they do is intended to lead to more native ports. Quite the opposite actually - they've officially said not to bother!

So just like Google never said that Stadia would encourage native desktop GNU/Linux game development and people kind of assumed it would happen, Valve have never said it either and it probably won't happen.

This was one concern long ago about the approach VP did, but at least they supported the title running under GNU/Linux. There's not even that here, and native development (and support) is being discouraged - the result of which is this news. I can't see it ending well for GNU/Linux desktop gaming.
It would make more sense to me to encourage devs/publisher to provide native builds and have Proton as a fallback.
Best would be to establish in-house know how and awareness for nativ ports. Doesn't happen this way.

Just think Microsoft comes up with a Direct3D 13, completely incompatible and there is no such working Proton channel.
No way they could pull off something reliably working within months.
Proton (and Steam Deck) will gain compatibility at a similar time frame than other consoles on the market. Consoles usually play catch up with PC, anyway.
But console builds ARE native builds.
They are fine in this picture.

All I wanted to highlight is, you're creating strong unhealthy dependencies on MS.
