The games will appear alongside current fare as a new programming genre -- similar to what Netflix did with documentaries or stand-up specials. The company doesn’t currently plan to charge extra for the contentIf so, I see no reason not to try it at least.
The SteamOS-like Linux distribution GamerOS becomes ChimeraOS with a new release

Is very likely that Arch will be used for the foreseeable future, but the relation between Chimera and its underlying OS is not fixed.

Quoting: slaapliedjeI like the name, though I don't think it fits for what is essentially Steam on top of Arch. StarchOS. 😜Chimera uses an update mechanism called frzr, which delivers pre-built read-only systems images. It happens right now to be Arch based, but it can be switched to any other OS if needed.

AFAIK Chimera name was chosen because is a mix of several separated gaming related tools under the same OS, similar with the what a Chimera is:
The devs kept a "branding" channel on Discord for a couple of years, where people came up with various suggestions and this is the result.
For the record, I was OK with the name GamerOS, but the vast majority of reactions towards it was negative, so I think the name change is beneficial.
"ChimeraOS" might puzzle some, but is less likely to trigger such strong negative reactions overall as "GamerOS" did.
The term "chimera" has come to describe any mythical or fictional creature with parts taken from various animals, to describe anything composed of very disparate parts, or perceived as wildly imaginative, implausible, or dazzling.I don't see why the name should be obviously related to gaming, I mean what "Proton" for example has actually to do with gaming? Is just a name, as good as any.

I must say that I'm on the fence with the desktop mode. As a SteamOS user myself for about 7 years I saw the desktop mode being the number one source of user breakage for SteamOS's system.
If the desktop mode is to be kept, then indeed, they must do a better job this time in limiting the damage that the user can do to the system. They had the option to restore the system partition yes, but you could still harm the user partition/folders beyond repair.
I think that GamerOS (soon to be ChimeraOS) has the best approach (at least until a better idea comes up): no desktop, a read-only image for the system and a dedicated tool (steam-buddy) for tinkering, adding roms, games from Gog/Epic and so on, basically covering whatever people wanted the desktop mode for.
Personally, (for a tiny handheld) I see no use for a desktop mode, unless, you can dock it and hook it to a TV (which would be cool though).

The latest games additions for Pro were not bad either: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III, MotoGP20, Chronos: Before the Ashes, and Blue Fire. Chronos: Before the Ashes in particular felt pretty interesting.

I love what these guys are doing but (and I apologize in advance) I can't stand that silly stupid name.
I've been wanted to try it few times, but I was repelled each time by the name, yes, I'm that shallow.
It pains me to say it, to write it or just look at it. It doesn't make any sense. What the heck were they thinking?

I don't have the hardware itself, but I do have the OS (it was uploaded by some Youtuber > and promptly taken down afterwards) and I must say that is pretty neat.
It recognized most of my controller and got into some games right away. It has that retro feel look and sound overall and I can see why nostalgic gamers might love it.
What it needs is more games and a bigger user-base, hopefully the the actual launch will help. It would be sad to see it transform into another Ouya.
