Heroic Games Launcher 2.6.0 out now adding auto updates, new theme

Very nice! Seems to work very well. The only complaint I had when trying it is that the scroll position of the list is not remembered when you go back to it. I was checking the install size of a few games and having to start at the top again after going back was slightly annoying.

Also noticed that the "nile" dev is working on Heroic now. So I'm hopeful that the amazon games stuff might eventually make it into Heroic as well so I have all my alternative sources in one place.

Ubisoft just broke their games on Linux desktop and Steam Deck

Waaaay back in the early days of Steam on Linux, I decided to not spend money on anything with 3rd party dependencies. In the years since then it has been made clear many times that this was the right decision. So happy to say that this does not affect me.

AMD GPU driver on Linux and Steam Deck to get big improvement on stuttering problems
31 Jan 2023 at 2:04 pm UTC

I've enabled proton experimental for a couple of games and it works nicely. It doesn't completely eliminate stutter, but it's definitely a big step up. The biggest test for it was Star Citizen, which still has noticeable stutter but more in line with DXVK_ASYNC builds. And a far cry from the multiple second stalls with plain DXVK.

The new Dead Space is sadly a great big mess on Steam Deck

Dead Space EULA
Aaand that's it. No mention of Origin / EA App on Steam.
Also no mention of Denuvo, but it's still there. You'll have to ask someone who bought it to make sure.

Since it appears to work well on a regular Linux PC, it's probably not going to be as simple as a Proton patch.

Forspoken needs desktop Linux to spoof being a Steam Deck to work

Just factually false.
It would be nice if they separated the deck and general reports though. It's really annoying to have to search for where the desktop reports begin. Something tabbed or folded that is remembered between pages.

It is possible that they did a little workaround somewhere to make it run on Steam Deck and they check for it to apply that. Possibly to do with starting appropriate non-crashing graphics settings.

Not going to test it though. Base game for 80 euro. A deluxe edition over a hundred. And of course some unacceptable denuvo. Good thing there is nothing about this game that sounds appealing to me.

Left 4 Dead from Valve has a prototype leaked online

Maybe it was not a leak, but a "leak". And this is the start of the marketing campaign of Left 4 Dead 3!!! Haha, I know, silly, it has a three. :dizzy:

NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti launches January 5th

Quoting: dpanterFaster than a 3090 Ti? That's a bold claim. Performance back when it was called '4080 12 GB' was more in line with a 3080. Guess we'll see soon.
I imagine that it's very special circumstances. Like everything measured with full ray tracing and DLSS3.

Valve dev teases HDR support for Linux Gaming

Quoting: pete910To be honest having used HDR on windows in the Past and films ect on my LG oled I cant say it's that impressive. For the most part it resembles some turning the Saturation and colours up to full.

Dare say it's a personnel preference thing at the end of the day.
What I find amusing is that the first Far Cry basically had a software version of HDR in it. So when you'd go into a cave, it'd be really dark, then it was like your eyes would adjust, then when you left a cave, it'd be really bright...
I think Fallout III did something like this when leaving the bunker vault for the first time (in your life).
Tone mapping (combined with HDR rendering) have been the norm for games with dynamic lighting for a long time. Far Cry may have been the first, but after the needed features came into DX9, things moved pretty quick.
