Steam Deck hits over 4,000 titles marked either Verified or Playable

Quoting: 1xokThe Switch currently has currently 4404 games, see:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_Switch_games [External Link]

Where will the Steam Deck be after 5 years?
Well, let's see, assuming a linear extrapolation, and that Valve's been rating things for roughly half a year at this point, about 40 thousand games. (Don't put too much stock into this back-of-the-envelope calculation though!)

Now that I've got my Deck in hand and have been enjoying it for a week and a half, I'm finding myself more personally invested in these numbers. Also in proper controller support for games, now that I own one for the first time.

Valve gives the Discovery Queue a makeover to help you find your next game

Well, I went through a little over a hundred games, wishlisted nine based on a snap decision, went through them to check them out more thoroughly, removed eight, and downloaded a demo for one (Dice Tribes: Ambitions). So it's about the same conversion rate as the old discovery queue, apparently.

Edit: hmm, the Dice Tribes demo is broken, the native version wouldn't start and Proton (both the latest stable and experimental) just loaded a frozen window. Unfortunate.

Valve gives the Discovery Queue a makeover to help you find your next game

I've definitely tried to engage with the discovery queue before; according to Steam I've looked at 1,707 games, and wishlisted 22 from the discovery queue, for a ~1.3% successful conversion rate (though I can't remember any specific ones I discovered from it off the top of my head). I'm not sure if that's because the algorithm is bad, or because I'm just very picky in what I play. I've got pretty eclectic tastes, so I'm sure the algorithm starts short-circuiting every time I load it up trying to find new things I might like. I'm giving this new version a try now. Initial impressions:

  • It's quite fast to switch between games, which is a positive. Instead of loading up the full page for each title, it just shows a sort-of trailer and some quick information like tags and "why [the algorithm thinks] this game is relevant to you". This enables much faster flicking between games when you look at one and instantly know you're not interested.

  • Unfortunately, clicking on the "store page" for a game still takes you to that page, which loses your place in the queue when you navigate back. In practice this isn't terrible since you can now flick back to where you were in a matter of seconds with the new speedy interface, but it still feels tacky.

I guess one way to use the new version would be to rapid-fire through a bunch of games quickly; anything that has you tempted to click the store page button, wishlist it instead. Then, when you've gotten tired of going through games, head over to your wishlist and sort through what you've just added. Note that I'm not endorsing this new way of using it, just pointing out a possible way of doing so. With my Steam Deck having arrived last week (just as the summer sale was ending, of course) I'm on the lookout for some more games that would go well with its form factor, so I'll probably give this method a try. (The evidence above suggests I need to look at about 100 games to find one that interests me, better get started I guess…)

Stray is the most wishlisted Steam game and it's Steam Deck Verified

Oh, it's only $30? I was expecting the usual AAA $60. Definitely wishlisted, and that bumped up the chances of me actually getting it quite a bit higher.

Quoting: WorMzyCheers, I'd already found '1)' as a workaround for the time being, good to know there are other options. :)

I just thought we were past the whole 'WiFi sucks on Linux' era. At least we're not still heavily reliant on ndiswrapper...
I got mine the same day and haven't had any issues with WiFi so far, so…50-50 I guess?

(Yeah I know there could be all kinds of other reasons. )

Team Fortress 2 gets a big update with Valve back in action
8 Jul 2022 at 6:37 pm UTC

Added a game server setting, "tf_fall_damage_disablespread", to disable random fall damage (default: 0)
Wait wait wait, I've got over a thousand hours in TF2 and I somehow never knew fall damage was random??

I haven't actually played in a few years, I should hop on again. Spend those MvM tickets sitting in my inventory.

You should avoid the stock Firefox install on Steam Deck as it's badly outdated (updated)

Good know, especially since my Deck is slated to arrive today.

The Forgotten World free update out for Monster Sanctuary

Ooh, I should get back into this. I managed to finish the main story (after taking, like, 8 or 9 tries to beat the final boss*), but never got around to finishing collecting all the monsters.

*With max-level monsters…Pokémon-level difficulty this ain't…

Quoting: WMan22A lot of people are just waiting for the mere opportunity to pick up their Steam Deck. The platform's rolling out so slowly, though I'd prefer they do it this way over just bulk releasing them and have scalpers snatch em all up and run into the same problem anyway.
Still plenty of scalpers around, noticing Steam Decks for sale on Ebay at big mark-ups. Sure, you can only reserve one Deck per Steam account - but that doesn't stop you owning multiple accounts.
Though they'd have had to own those accounts for at least one month prior to the opening of pre-orders; accounts less than a month old weren't allowed to pre-order until after a three-day period. (For reference, I just got my order email June 30 after ordering ~1.25 hours after the window opened, so we're nowhere near that 3 day mark yet.) I'm sure there are some people who had accounts like that they could use, but I bet a lot of those scalpers only have a single unit to sell at this point.

Valve to ship 'more than double' the number of Steam Decks each week

Something I haven't seen mentioned anywhere, is that you don't only get an email, you also get a big notification upon opening Steam (including a pop-up window with a checkbox that must be checked in order to stop it opening each time Steam opens). So if you run Steam with any regularity you've got a good chance of seeing that notification even if you forget to check your email regularly.

Quoting: WorMzyJust got my reservation fulfilled too. Wasn't expecting to get 68 Steam Sale cards from the transaction!
And 67,000 Steam points.
