Run around a cyberpunk city as a lost cat in Stray - out now

Been playing for an hour or so on the Deck and it's been fine. The graphics are bit pixel-y on default, so I might fiddle with those a bit, though it's not terrible. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to transfer saves across devices, I was going to continue on my PC with graphics at max but only had the option to start a new game. Maybe I'll do it for a future replay.

Into the Breach: Advanced Edition update is out now

One of the games I put on my Deck as a good low-power low-intensity option, and I've just tried it out (on the Deck) for the first time. Seems to have a pretty good control scheme (as you'd hope for a Verified game). Maybe I'll get around to finally getting those remaining achievements.

Oof, I like the concept, but I'm finding the nigh-constant screen-shake in that trailer nauseating. If there's an option to turn off screen-shake it might be fun.

I guess this is one of those "You'll know if it you have it" situations, right? I haven't noticed any fan noise from mine, so I'm assuming I've got one of the non-whiny ones. Or does it only show up under heavy load? I've mostly been playing lighter games so far, nothing too taxing.

Steam Deck hits over 4,000 titles marked either Verified or Playable

Quoting: 1xokThe Switch currently has currently 4404 games, see:

Where will the Steam Deck be after 5 years?
Well, let's see, assuming a linear extrapolation, and that Valve's been rating things for roughly half a year at this point, about 40 thousand games. (Don't put too much stock into this back-of-the-envelope calculation though!)

Now that I've got my Deck in hand and have been enjoying it for a week and a half, I'm finding myself more personally invested in these numbers. Also in proper controller support for games, now that I own one for the first time.

Valve gives the Discovery Queue a makeover to help you find your next game

Well, I went through a little over a hundred games, wishlisted nine based on a snap decision, went through them to check them out more thoroughly, removed eight, and downloaded a demo for one (Dice Tribes: Ambitions). So it's about the same conversion rate as the old discovery queue, apparently.

Edit: hmm, the Dice Tribes demo is broken, the native version wouldn't start and Proton (both the latest stable and experimental) just loaded a frozen window. Unfortunate.

Valve gives the Discovery Queue a makeover to help you find your next game

I've definitely tried to engage with the discovery queue before; according to Steam I've looked at 1,707 games, and wishlisted 22 from the discovery queue, for a ~1.3% successful conversion rate (though I can't remember any specific ones I discovered from it off the top of my head). I'm not sure if that's because the algorithm is bad, or because I'm just very picky in what I play. I've got pretty eclectic tastes, so I'm sure the algorithm starts short-circuiting every time I load it up trying to find new things I might like. I'm giving this new version a try now. Initial impressions:

  • It's quite fast to switch between games, which is a positive. Instead of loading up the full page for each title, it just shows a sort-of trailer and some quick information like tags and "why [the algorithm thinks] this game is relevant to you". This enables much faster flicking between games when you look at one and instantly know you're not interested.

  • Unfortunately, clicking on the "store page" for a game still takes you to that page, which loses your place in the queue when you navigate back. In practice this isn't terrible since you can now flick back to where you were in a matter of seconds with the new speedy interface, but it still feels tacky.

I guess one way to use the new version would be to rapid-fire through a bunch of games quickly; anything that has you tempted to click the store page button, wishlist it instead. Then, when you've gotten tired of going through games, head over to your wishlist and sort through what you've just added. Note that I'm not endorsing this new way of using it, just pointing out a possible way of doing so. With my Steam Deck having arrived last week (just as the summer sale was ending, of course) I'm on the lookout for some more games that would go well with its form factor, so I'll probably give this method a try. (The evidence above suggests I need to look at about 100 games to find one that interests me, better get started I guess…)

Stray is the most wishlisted Steam game and it's Steam Deck Verified

Oh, it's only $30? I was expecting the usual AAA $60. Definitely wishlisted, and that bumped up the chances of me actually getting it quite a bit higher.

I just thought we were past the whole 'WiFi sucks on Linux' era. At least we're not still heavily reliant on ndiswrapper...
I got mine the same day and haven't had any issues with WiFi so far, so…50-50 I guess?

(Yeah I know there could be all kinds of other reasons. )

Team Fortress 2 gets a big update with Valve back in action

Added a game server setting, "tf_fall_damage_disablespread", to disable random fall damage (default: 0)
Wait wait wait, I've got over a thousand hours in TF2 and I somehow never knew fall damage was random??

I haven't actually played in a few years, I should hop on again. Spend those MvM tickets sitting in my inventory.
