Quoting: elmapulConnectivity
"Bluetooth
Bluetooth 5.0 (support for controllers, accessories and audio)
Wi-Fi
Dual-band Wi-Fi radio, 2.4GHz and 5GHz, 2 x 2 MIMO, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac"
no 3g/4g/5g? they are crazy or expect people to pair it with their phone to play on the go?
I think they're expecting people to play single player games on it when out of Wi-Fi range. Would potentially be interesting to see phone networking connectivity in a 2.0 version, though I imagine that increases the complexity considerably because now you have to include some way of handling phone plan subscriptions and such.

The Valve Steam Deck, lots of excitement and plenty to think about for Linux gaming

Took a bit over an hour and a half, but I've got my reservation in! I assume the fact that the Steam servers were up and down for so long indicates a healthy interest. I hope Valve releases some numbers on reservations next week so we can get an idea of actual numbers. While obviously not 100% of reservations will turn into purchases for various reasons, the $5 price should at least do a decent job of limiting it to serious potential buyers; combined with the one-per-Steam-account limit should give a relatively accurate figure for number of people (especially for the reservations in the first 48 hours, since anyone making multiple accounts at this point to try to scalp units won't be able to order it until afterwards).

I'm interested enough to put down $5 for a pre-registration tomorrow. A few years ago, I probably wouldn't have been interested—I've never owned a console of any kind and have always felt my self-built beefy Linux-running gaming rig to be sufficient. But the older I get (and hear my friend talk about playing games on his Switch in bed) the more appealing I find the idea of being able to play my Steam library on the couch, or in bed, or on an airplane, or when visiting family for a few weeks over Christmas, or on a train, or…anywhere my desktop can't come with me, basically. Very little of my library is hefty AAA-type games, so the vast majority of it would easily run on these specs without it breaking a sweat. Possibly not all of it would play well without a mouse, but again: I've got a desktop for that (or I could maybe plug in a mouse while traveling). The fact that it's a full-blown PC with the possibility of running other apps on it also makes it more appealing as an entertainment device, allowing it act something like a small laptop (being able to browse the internet over Wi-Fi on its screen instead of on my phone's smaller screen might be nice while traveling, for instance, or possibly streaming games from my desktop that'd be too resource heavy). By the time it's actually available to purchase in December we'll know a lot more about and I can decide if I want to go through with it or get my $5 back.

Linux Foundation launches the Open 3D Engine based upon Amazon Lumberyard

I don't recall ever hearing of the Amazon Lumberyard engine before. What kinds of games has it been used to create?

There's now a Debian User Repository in the style of the Arch User Repository

Interesting. I like Debian stable, but must admit the slow package update cycle is occasionally frustrating. I already use the debian-backports repository but that only has so many packages, and not usually less popular ones. I'll take a look at this.

Talking point: what have you been playing recently?

A friend introduced me to CrossCode back in April or so which I picked up in May, and I've been absolutely loving it (despite action-adventure RPGs not normally being my "thing")—this is seriously one of the best stories I've experienced in a game. And the twists are what make it great, so I can't even gush about the plot. I guess I can applaud the devs for adding some very comprehensive difficulty sliders to make their game more accessible to more people (it's got quite a high skill ceiling and is not easy at the default) and having a native Linux version.

A busy weekend ahead perhaps? Steam Play Proton 6.3-5 is out now

I picked up Dorfromantik yesterday and it ran fine with Proton—didn't even have to pick a specific version, it just automatically fired up. Definitely a lovely and stress-relieving game.

Prison Architect: Second Chances expansion and free update The Pen out now
19 Jun 2021 at 9:13 am UTC

I've never really been interested in Prison Architect before (I've seen my housemate play it/seen some footage on YouTube so I'm familiar with it), but this expansion has me intrigued. Maybe it's just my naïvety and optimism, but I like the idea of running a prison for reforming criminals.

Return a wasteland to green glory in the upcoming Terra Nil
19 Jun 2021 at 9:09 am UTC

I tried out the demo (available now with Steam Fest), and found it very reminiscent of Islanders; you have a single currency (leaves/points) which buildings cost, but many of them give it back when you increase greenery, so it's a game of trying to optimize your net value. It's a bit more involved than Islanders though (which was pretty much limited to just placement of buildings) as you actually affect and change the terrain here. For whatever reason I didn't enjoy it as much as Islanders (I just found it more stressful, somehow), but it's absolutely a well-made game and if you like that style of gameplay it's well-worth checking out.

Humble are giving away Surviving Mars for the next 72 hours

Quoting: Purple Library GuyHuh. Seems like Humble is orienting towards being a Steam . . . hmmm, not parasite. Not quite symbiont though. A Steam Remora?
A commensal symbiont (where one partner benefits without the other being affected) rather than a mutual symbiont (where both partners benefit)?
