A New The Witcher 2 Linux Beta Appears, Improved Performance

For me, the performance (with a GeForce GT 630) is now actually worse. Especially when there's a GUI thing, like the tutorial windows or texts like "Move to the quest destination" pop up, the FPS drop significantly. And the inventory screen locks up for 2 seconds every 10 seconds.
The conversation with the knight also worsen. While it previously went only a bit stuttery on Geralt-closeups, it's now very stuttery.
I also get audio pops now.
All in all, it moves the game from "barely playable" (well, except the issue where it shit itself near the end of the tutorial, going to one frame every few minutes until I was finally able to kill it from the console) to just about "unplayable" for me.
Not impressed.

Really a bit off-topic, but still:

Space-y Doom band Earthmass is crowdfunding for their new LP. Their previous material is here on their Bandcamp page [External Link]. I myself really like their sound, especially Lunar Dawn (Keep, Relic & Ritual) [External Link].

I would recommend you getting the first two games too, though, since they're great. The Director's Cut editions on Steam even work on Linux. Or alternatively, the originals work with ScummVM. :)

Quoting: Segata SanshiroCan you play 5 without having played the others?Yes. There's a few references to the other games, but you can still play it without any problems.

Neat, looking forward to that.
But why would you need to contract someone to "port" it? It runs on AGS, ffs! AGS has already been ported by the community.

Oh, and favourite releases so far this year? Without much thought, that's what comes to my mind in terms of noteworthy things:
- I really, really dig The Maker's Eden [External Link]. I love the style, the story is interesting and I adore the music. I have a thing for Noir and Noir-ish Jazz. Just a bit sad that the first act is a bit short and that I'll have to wait for the next acts
- Unrest [External Link] was quite nice too, but different than I expected. The cliffhangerish end is difficult to stomach. And that you can't just easily fix the culture's problems is realistic and fits the story, but...it is a bit of a downer. Still, I'm glad I played it; and there too I love the music
- Shadowrun: Dragonfall [External Link] was this year too, right? Awesome campaign, far better than Dead Man's Switch. Also, again, nice music
- Heroes Rise: HeroFall [External Link] was great too. Yeah, it's a bit pulpy, but in a charming way. Sadly, no music at all :P

In terms of games already released on Windows, I'm still waiting for Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect and Divinity: Original Sin...
For non-released games, I'm actually quite psyched about Wasteland 2 right now. And the recent gameplay videos of Pillars of Eternity really got me excited as well.

Well, this here seems to be the public Tremulous repository, at least the only one I can find: https://github.com/darklegion/tremulous [External Link]
Dunno about Tremulous work, but at least there's infrequent merge commit with the ioquake3 changes...

Usually, a fork (and I'm talking about a real official fork here, where people want to take development into a different direction and not just a "fork" of the code to your own GitHub profile) is not done lightly.
It arises for example when a big enough group in the development team has different visions or opinions on how to do things (XFree86 vs X.org [External Link], or when there's personal differences between the people in the team (ffmpeg vs libav [External Link], or when there's been license changes people don't agree with (RhodeCode vs Kallithea [External Link].
Is is almost never "unnecessary", there's always a reason necessitating the fork. And often, the users benefit from this, by gaining different options and choices.
