Steam Beta lets you create a collection filtered by games you and friends own

Quoting: BlackBloodRumI tried collections with using genre tags a while ago. It was cool up until the point a game had two matching tags. Then it'll duplicate that game in your list and you have to manually remove one of the games from one of the new "automatic" collections.

That got annoying fast.

So back to manually organizing by genre with no duplicates it was

That's interesting. I haven't noticed that though and I have collection that matches three tags: adventure, point & click and story rich. Either the problem has been fixed or the problem might be bit more complicated than that.

Quoting: PhiladelphusThat looks incredibly useful! Now, er, for those of us who've never set up a collection before, maybe a quick step-by-step would be nice?
There seems to be such guides already: https://www.thegamer.com/steam-how-to-sort-your-games-into-genres-and-tags/ [External Link]

Collections are great.

I use mix of static and dynamic collections. While dynamic collections have lot of options, they don't have everything. For example I have static collection for games I would like to finish.

I have few collections visible in library home page and sometimes I change sorting of the collection to keep things bit more fresh. Usually they're sorted by last played.

Humble Store has a big Summer Sale live, lots on offer for Steam Deck & Linux

Quoting: sobkasDidn't Square Enix sold their rights to The Embrace Group?
The Embracer Group acquired several studios from Square Enix, yes. Though there might be two explanations for this that I can think of.

First is that sale might not be final yet, bit like Elon Musk "bought" Twitter. If you look at the press release, there's purchase date: https://embracer.com/release/embracer-group-enters-into-an-agreement-to-acquire-eidos-crystal-dynamics-and-square-enix-montreal-amongst-other-assets/ [External Link]

Other explanation that somebody is just not up to date with what has happened. I would assume the former though.

Get a couple treats in the new Linux & Thrills bundle on Steam

I happened to finish Zodiacats just a moment ago. Not sure how it fits the thrill theme, but if you like cats and jigsaw puzzles (if you buy it because you like the jigsaw shape, you're going to be disappointed: they're squares), it's easily worth the 1,55€ it costs.

As for the bundle itself, if you don't like Stone Story RPG, it might not be worth it. The thing is that it costs more than the other games combined. Luckily there's a demo.

What's a VN?
VN is short for visual novel.

Quoting: PhiladelphusI remember coming across this years ago (though after the Kickstarter, and possibly post-dev burnout), and I still remember being inspired by one of the descriptions about why it was being made, which to paraphrase went something like "Procedural generation has a bad reputation because it often gives boring results. But that's not a limitation of procedural generation itself, it just means we need to develop better algorithms for it." (In the same way that early 3D games often looked bad, not because 3D was inherently bad, but because the tech hadn't matured yet.) While proc gen is obviously not something for every game (just as amazing 2D games continue to be made, there'll always be a need for hand-made content), I think in the intervening years we've started to see some of those "better algorithms" come about, making for some really interesting and fun games where proc gen gets used (I've spent hundreds of hours in Noita, for instance). Glad to see the code get open-sourced and excited to see what comes about from it.
I guess the problem is that some games overreach bit and get into state where procedural generation starts to suck more and more time from the actual game development. Games where it works seem to be able to get away with less. Of course it's fun to to think being able to do best procedural engine out there, but it might be better to make scope of the project smaller in order to be able to deliver something in reasonable time. And maybe do several very small games that can be finished in week or so. That gives valuable experience for bigger games.

As for procedural generation getting better, at least there seems to be lot of tutorials for the 2D procedural world generation. So people don't have to figure out the basics on their own.

Get the Railway Empire Complete Collection in this new bundle

Quoting: starfarerHmm. Every time I read something about these kinds of games I think to myself: how does this hold up against OpenTTD? Because honestly I didn't have as much fun with any new kind of tycoon game as with OpenTTD. Can anyone chime in?
Compared to OpenTTD, Railway Empire is more focused on the story. There's a campaign that has multiple targets to meet. There's also other things like technology tree and stock market to keep you occupied.

So while there are some similarities, they are totally different games.

Quoting: StoneColdSpiderIf the humour and the puzzles are as good as the art style them im all in!
Demo is available so you can see it yourself. Seems to be pretty short though. Stops bit abruptly.

Previous demo was longer and had way too much exposition, but maybe they have split things up for the final game. I can't remember if the case in the demo was part of the office banter.

Mark your calendars, Steam Next Fest returns in October 2022

Quoting: FireStarWGood discovery event that keeps you in the steam ecosystem although it has been almost exhausting checking out 20+ demos every fest...
I reached 50 last fest

Though having 8 hours taken by work would have hindered that a lot. Next fest just happened to be during my vacation.

For those that actually want to enjoy and find something to put into wishlist, just browsing most popular demos will be much more efficient. Most of the games at the top are there for a good reason.
