Tactical roguelike with deck-management 'Oaken' added a Linux build
6 May 2022 at 8:15 pm UTC

Demo already worked nicely. Oaken seemed to have solid gameplay, but fell just little bit of short of wishlist territory for me. Steam reviews are quite positive though.

If you're on the fence there's demo. Too bad the native demo doesn't seem to be available, but most likely it will work with Proton just fine.

Quoting: xaviThe classification of Roguelikes and Roguelites could take days, but for me the most important way to distinguish them is if the previous plays have significant help on the new play. For example Rogue Legacy is an example where you win because you have more "powers" from previous plays. And in Roguelikes this adventage is minimum (in Nethack you may find bones of the previous plays, but you need to identify objects and they are cursed).

According to that:

As Roguelikes what I liked the most are Nethack, Brogue, FTL, Noita.

As Roguelites: Enter the Gungeon, Rogue Legacy, Sproggiwood.
I accidentally classified Enter the Gungeon correctly. I forgot about the permanent upgrades.

There was actually bit more in depth article from few days ago, the video confuses the issue bit: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/593110/view/3175610095143798950 [External Link]

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is out now

Quoting: GroganThey still owe me for the first one. Insultingly stupid and disrespectful of my time. I played through a few different scenarios in hopes that there was going to be more to it, but none of them were interesting. I did like the narrator (that's what attracted me to it in the first place), but that got old, fast amidst the annoyance of the game. Harsh, but that's how I feel about that game.
That does sound like Stanley Parable. The original doesn't have much to offer if you're not curious about what happens if you would have chosen differently.
Spoiler, click me
I wonder if many have actually obeyed the narrator...

If you didn't like the first one, I doubt you will like the Ultra Deluxe either. The new content at times references the old game, which would make you bit confused. Ultra Deluxe also doesn't reveal everything right away so some patience is needed.

At least one reviewer was disappointed by the lack of new content, which might have been just because Ultra Deluxe content is bit hidden and you can miss lot of it if you give up early.

Here's few that I have played and cost less than 10€

Slay the Spire [External Link]
Slay the Spire is the inspiration for some of the later card games, I have seen at least one game copying things almost directly from it. Requires some dedication for completing it. That says bit about how well received the game has been.

Enter the Gungeon [External Link]
Roguelite version of bullet hell game. Bit too hard for me, but quite many people enjoy it.

FTL: Faster Than Light [External Link]
Another bit influential game. In short it's spaceship simulation take on the roguelite genre. Or could say roguelike as it has permadeath. Never got very far though, but plenty of people like it.

Hollow Knight [External Link]
One of the better metroidvanias. Personally I haven't finished it as boss fights are quite hard. Still quite many people like it.

Quoting: CanadianBlueBeer...Never did the domesticate Lox before. (or pigs. still haven't done wolves yet)...
Pigs and Lox are fairly easy but it's time consuming. Wolves were the hardest - I trapped a some in a pit I'd dug but something kept killing them. Tamed them eventually and then had to lead them right across the island to my base. I keep two inside and a load at the gates as "guard dogs".
Drakes at least can shoot at open pit. Also night wolves will disappear easily in the morning, you need to start taming process already at night.

As for being worth it, pigs do provide good meat source at the beginning. Getting one or two stars improve the meat to leather scraps ratio. In order get pigs multiply though, farming helps. Carrots will lose their usefulness first, so they can be fed to pigs.

Wolves also provide meat, which is not useful though before you get silver. Before that you can take few with you to keep annoyances away. I haven't yet transported them between islands, but it's doable if know how to prepare and avoid enemies at all costs (wolves will not be less aggressive in a boat...).

I have domesticated Lox also, but back then they were useful only tearing down trees and squashing graydwarves.

Quoting: subWasn't that planned to be a free upgrade for those already owning it?
I don't know about that but the old game is using Source while the new is made in Unity. So it probably involved quite a lot of work.
It's instead 33% discount for first two weeks if you own the original.

Quoting: fabertaweMy obligatory Valheim comment...

It's now surpassed Borderlands 2 as my second most played game. It's got a way to go to beat Mindustry but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes number one spot!

Still having a whale of a time in a newly generated world. I'm currently farming Surtlings
We seem to have similar games in our top lists. For me Valheim is still number four though. For me it still needs more hours to beat Borderlands 2, but I think it it will get there. After that Factorio is not far, but beating Civ 5 needs lot more.

Mindustry is on sixth spot and could use some more hours. There has been at least one big overhaul since the last time I played it.

Quoting: TermyI really like Valheim - but the progress in development really is disappointing considering the massive success.
Me and my friends are waiting eagerly for enough new content to start another playthrough, but since our first playthrough right after release not too much has changed unfortunately...if you don't want to resort to heavy modding that is.

Hopefully the Mistlands update will arrive soon and will blow our minds :D
There have been new content though, only thing is missing is totally new biome.

Combat and food has been overhauled. Few new enemies have been added. Also caves have been added to mountains. As far as I know, caves are bigger than the troll caves and have new enemies. Which in turn have new drops that can be used for crafting. I have been on purpose trying to watch too many videos about the caves. I'm not yet sure if I have good enough armor to visit them.

I was also hesitant of starting new playthrough, but Valheim is still fun game, even when the changes have been bit more gradual.

But of course if you wait for Mistlands, you'll see all of these changes for the first time, so there will be more surprises.

Terraformers, a relaxed game about turning the Red Planet green, out now

Quoting: anewsonSeen this game a lot on Twitch lately, but had no idea what was going on. Enjoyed the writeup, thanks. Just me or are there a lot of Mars games coming out lately? Red Planet Farming and Planet Crafter come to mind.

EDIT: Red Planet farming actually came out in 2018, which also saw the release of Terraforming Mars (no relation to Terraformers). Maybe 2018 was the true Mars gaming year.
Could be. Surviving Mars was also released in 2018.

As for Terraforming Mars, boardgame was out already in 2016. I don't know how big influence it was for rest of the games.

DEFCON: Everybody Dies [External Link]

given the current situation.
I saw interesting video about it [External Link]. Apparently there have been study about how the game effects people.

As for remastering, it really might not need more than Darwinia. Graphical style is intentionally simplistic after all.
