Star Labs reveal their new StarLite, a Surface-like Linux tablet

This is looking interesting, unfortunately it's not something I can see myself using much. Maybe if it had a better iGPU it would be interesting as small/cheap notebooks for the kids.
I see the N200 is a cut-down N300 where Intel disabled half the cores and reduced the clockspeed of the iGPU by 40%. That would have made this notably more capable as an office machine.

On a different topic, I'm still waiting for my Byte preorder from them. Does anyone have an idea when they will start shipping those?

The modular Framework Laptop 16 opens up for pre-orders

I just fed the kids and the email that declares orders opening up came in.
Considering I have been holding off on upgrading my half broken notebook because I wanted something that would be supported on Linux (and the FW16 is just plain cool in how repairable/upgradeable it is) I already had a budget and everything set aside.

So, instantly tried to order one.

And the site went down.
Kept on trying, and I managed to get a Batch 1 reservation in! Yay!

In the first hour they sold out batches 1 & 2, and 3 followed in the next hour.
Crazy fast sales.

Quoting: grigiWas thinking this would be good for a backup server as it has a 2.5" sata bay, and have plenty of processing power left for a home-assistant server (and/or software router).
Correction, turns out the 2.5" SATA drive is mounted on-top of the device, which is fine as it still uses an internal connector.
This is fine for what I intend to use it as, so I'm fine with it.

Always good to support the small-time suppliers when you can

Fab retro-fuelled FPS 'Selaco' gets a demo upgrade for Steam Deck / Linux

Quoting: jarhead_hYou know, before The Matrix hit theaters I had been in boot camp, and when I was in school of infantry it came to the base theater and I had absolutely no idea what the hell it was about. I just wanted to go to the movies. Simply put if you went into that film any other way than absolutely blind you missed out because you had some idea of what it might be about. You had things already spoiled by someone, etc.

I bring it up because as soon as I saw the first trailer for Selaco I stopped watching any more trailers. I don't want to play the demo, I want to go into it completely clueless and then be blown away just like that night at the movies.
We just finished our Matric (final year 12) exams, and went to the local cinema (only had 2 movies running) and this thing called "The Matrix" was showing, it looked better than the other.

So, in ignorance, we watched it. And it was an awesome experience.
I totally support your point!

My wife has started making disapproving noises when I play Brotato. A sure sign of a great game

Quoting: Purple Library GuyIt's nice that they're putting out powerful Linux laptops.
But, could somebody maybe do a wimpy Linux laptop? That's more what I'm in the market for.
RIP netbooks. Something along those lines would make a great (and, for my purposes, much more useful) alternative to Chromebooks in this day and age!
My wife manages OK with a Chromebook most of the time because her computing needs are very modest. But when she wants to do something it doesn't want to do, she's basically hooped. If MacOS is a "walled garden", ChromeOS is a "walled planter"!
What about something like the StarLite [External Link] ?

I agree with the weird complete lack of AMD dgpu's offered by linux notebook vendors.
The Ryzen cpu's also perform notably better unplugged than the Intel ones, but on the counterside, the Intel CPU's tend to have fewer powermanagement bugs and coreboot is also much better supported. So I', not really too concerned about that.

But I keep on remembering the abysmal experience with an Nvidia GPU on linux as the device gets older...
My kids are still using an old Sandy-bridge notebook with a Radeon 7730M (unmuxed dual gpu) and it works great. At least that old device is still useful, whereas my Ivy-bridge era notebook with its Nvidia gpu stopped being usable half a decade ago. Seems such a waste.
