Is O3DE very different from the current Lumberyard used on New World?

The Zink driver for OpenGL over Vulkan shows good performance on NVIDIA

I'm still wanting to see who will make the first attempt to make an entire linux distro using only wayland + Vulkan render (and zink + xwayland for legacy apps).

NVIDIA takes on AMD FSR with their new open source Image Scaling

Quoting: GuestTheir closed source software is how they keep a grip on several markets. They only released this because FSR was gaining developer mindshare. They only open source stuff when the alternative is their competition eating up their lunch.
The right thing for the wrong reason, I still see this as a win for users

Now I hope Khronos to take the best parts of each technology and make a true cross-platform standard.

KDE developer thinks they will become the 'Windows or Android' of the FOSS world
15 Nov 2021 at 5:07 pm UTC Likes: 2

-Cyanogen claimed that would replace google's android
-A lot of mmorpg games claimed that would be the "WoW killers" and some of them are not active anymore today

It's great to see developers excited and enjoying their well deserved recognition, but I really hope that Nate and the rest of KDE developers keep their feet on the ground and don't let the spotlight of steam deck blind them from reality.

KDE is an awesome DE but there are others that are awesome too, and maybe if linux gets more traction between average users, some company may invest in a new DE that could use the best concepts of the existing ones + improve them and suddenly start to swallow the market share. Even System 76 may be onto something with their announced "Rust based DE", who knows...

So I really hope they keep their main goal of improve the existing things rather than take step bigger than the leg, this includes boring tasks like polishing corner cases and fixing high complexity bugs.

Even so, congratulations for all the KDE developers for their awesome work

Valve answers the question: should developers do native Linux support or Proton?
13 Nov 2021 at 7:23 pm UTC Likes: 10

Between Proton vs Native I will always opt for the supported one

It doesn't really matter for me which tech the game is using to work, as long as the developers can patch it to works if it's necessary.

Also it's good to remind that some games may probably use the "embedded" version of proton (compiled together with the game files), that's not so different from some "native" builds that are only the original windows files with some other non-proton wrapper.

OPGames donates $300k to open source including Godot Engine and Blender

I'm not hearing much about O3DE (the Lumberyard fork maintained by the Linux Foundation) which is unfortunately since Cryengine/Lumberyard has some very good visuals.

Always nice to see those FOSS projects receiving donates by big companies, it means that they can improve those tools without have to worry about under funding like some other FOSS projects.

System76 patches APT for Pop!_OS to prevent users breaking their systems

Quoting: F.UltraAt least there is one comment thread with over 1024 comments with "wow didn't know linux sucked this hard".
Those kind of comments are usually from those fanboys who says "just install windows" when someone asks about linux support, then cries about some game being console exclusive (the irony).

The real damage is if someone thinking about trying linux take this video as the first (and maybe only) impression.

Quoting: x_wingHe is by far the biggest tech youtuber. Linus Sebastian is not exactly a Linux friendly PC user, but in his team he has a guy named Anthony that is an advocate of Linux OS.
Hmm then I get it why there's so many people talking about it

There's a guy in my country who makes some amazing videos about linux called "Diolinux" aiming for beginners, but since all his content is in Brazilian Portuguese his videos can't reach many people worldwide due to not being on English.

I'm pretty sure some of his followers access this site too

Linus: Why did it die?!?!?!?!?!
Spoiler, click me

-when were you when gnome dies?
-i was sat at Pop!_OS installing stem when apt ran
-'gnome is kill'
-'no'
Sorry

Quoting: dubigrasuBad timing indeed, sadly what a missed opportunity for Pop!_OS (God!...this name!) to show its value. (as a side note, I felt so vindicated when Linus agreed that it has a "spectacularly stupid name").
I am also one of the people that are bothered with those silly names, "Pop!_OS" and "MariaDB" for example make it looks like those are pet projects made by one person, rather than serious solutions.

How influential is this Linus guy in general (outside US/UK)? I never watched anything from him, but judging by how many people are talking about this video makes me thing that this could unfortunately scary new user out of trying a linux distro (or worse, advocating against it).

The fact that the "Linus" guy managed to break his system with a beginner's distro is the icing on this irony cake
