We don't know what the next LTS version is going to be, do we? I would stay on latest if it weren't for nvidia, but the nvidia drivers always make me nervous about updating the kernel.

Ahhhh, "always use this option"... how it took them so long to add this I don't know, but I'm sure glad it's finally there.

The best Linux distribution for gaming in 2023

I use Manjaro on all of my personal machines and am extremely happy with it, but I have to use Ubuntu for work and, I gotta say, I am not at all happy with it lately. Not only do you lack a viable alternative to AUR but the repositories you do have are aggravatingly bare, update *waaaay* too slowly, and things have only gotten worse since they started moving things to snap. Concerns about snap are a whole other issue, but removing even the *option* of installing something with `apt` because a snap exists can be annoying.

The default configuration may work ok, but Ubuntu never seems to work right when you try to change the configuration. Try to switch to window manager, it breaks GDM somehow. Install lightdm with apt, of course it's broken on install and has to be fixed to be useful.

Even the idea that there is tons of information on ubuntu because it's so widely used doesn't seem to actually pan out. As far as I know there is nothing even close to as comprehensive as the Arch wiki, and the ubuntu wiki frequently seems badly out of date.

So, yes, Ubuntu may work well if you intend to install it, play games and never do anything else, but for day-to-day use I'm not at all happy with where it is right now.

AMD announce RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT, plus FSR3 teased

While the price will surely make this a good option for many, it does have me concerned that they do not expect the performance to be nearly as good as nvidia this time around, which would be upsetting if true. I guess we'll just have to wait for benchmarks to see.

RimWorld - Biotech and the free 1.4 update out now
21 Oct 2022 at 4:07 pm UTC

Rimworld is one of those games that seems amazing but I've really struggled to enjoy. I find it plodding an tedious. Guess it's time to go back and try again, hopefully I'll stick with it long enough to get over the initial boredom.

I do remember having one game where there was a colonist who was really annoying because he had brain worms and then his girlfriend dumped him and he was becoming increasingly useless. Then he freaked out and attacked the village iguana. RIP annoying colonist, killed by an iguana in self-defense.

NVIDIA announces Ada Lovelace their 3rd generation RTX, DLSS 3 and Portal RTX

Looking forward to building a machine. I'm waiting for AMD's RDNA3 announcement and comparative benchmarks. I'm rooting for AMD, I really hope they turn out to be the obvious correct choice this time around.

On the EVGA news, it's very easy to imagine that nvidia treats these vendors like absolute garbage. The card vendors likely have no leverage whatsoever and nvidia probably gives absolutely zero shits that EVGA dropped them.

Axiom Verge 2 lands on Steam with Linux support and Steam Deck Verified

Quoting: Purple Library GuyThat strikes me as a matter of perspective. If anything more of a good news story. I mean, it almost seems that you're complaining that it launches now and Valve has our back (even if Epic most assuredly does not, but like, we knew that).
No, of course I don't mean it that way! And, for what it's worth, I'm not claiming that I really understood what I was doing when I was trying to get it to run, it's entirely possible I couldn't get it to run because of my own stupidity.

I instead meant to express my general feeling of unease about Valve's dominance. I love the work they've been doing and supporting, but I don't want to be totally dependent on them. (Though this was merely a personal anecdote that may not be representative of the overall situation.)

Axiom Verge 2 lands on Steam with Linux support and Steam Deck Verified

Kind of frustrating: I had tried pretty hard for months to get this game working on Epic (through Heroic and Lutris) but I absolutely could not get it to run. Then it releases on steam and it launches right away. This understandably makes me pretty nervous in general that I won't be able to get non-steam games running, which isn't a great feeling.

NVIDIA releases open source Linux GPU kernel modules, Beta Driver 515.43.04 out
13 May 2022 at 3:54 pm UTC

While it seems having open source kernel modules will be helpful and good for linux for all sorts of reasons, my impression is that it really will not mean a hell of a lot for *gaming*, even in the long run.

As people interested in linux gaming I think we should all still be rooting for AMD unless and until the situation drastically changes.

I for one am still hoping for the RDNA3 AMD cards to be an "obvious choice" in terms of performance so I don't even have to pay attention to nvidia's shenanigans any more.
