Steam Deck production better than expected, Q4 emails already going out

Quoting: MasterSleortEvery time they "ramp up production" and are able to deliver more fast to customers, I fear that it is because too many people have cancelled their order.
I personally don't see a problem with that? All it does it change who gets Decks, not how many are produced. Valve know they have a winner on their hands, they're not going to suddenly stop production even it a bunch of people cancel their reservations (which be for all kinds of reasons). And if anything, it ensures Decks are getting into the hands of people who really want them and are likely to be more favorable and spread glowing reviews about them to their friends rather than people who were on the fence.

Survival city-building game Synergy certainly looks different

Wow, that art style reminds me quite a lot of The Wandering Village.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyWait, in XCOM 2 the aliens already won before the beginning? I feel like I was playing a different game.
We are talking about the same game, right?
I . . . guess not.
Oh, OK!

To get somewhat back on topic, given how much I've enjoyed XCOM 1/2/CS, I'll have to keep an eye on Capes.

We are talking about the same game, right? In XCOM 2 you start out as a tiny resistance force of rag-tag soldiers fighting from an underdog position needing to rely on stealth and ambushes, in a world that's been conquered and occupied by aliens for decades (long enough to reshape some cities into gleaming futuristic Utopian visions and let others crumble into zombie Lost-filled ruins) trying to reconnect with other resistance forces around the world to ultimately forge a strong enough resistance force to drive off the aliens* and retake Earth.

**Well, the Elders/Ethereals mainly – XCOM: Chimera Squad reveals a whole lot of the various aliens ended up settling down on Earth and integrating.

Capes is set in a world where the villains won, brutally. Two decades later, a new generation of heroes are rising up and that's where you come in. […]and it all seems a little XCOM[…]
That's basically the plot of XCOM 2, with superheroes. Which is not a bad thing, XCOM 2 is pretty high up there in my list of most-played games.

Fab deck-builder Across the Obelisk out now under Paradox Arc publishing

Having just gotten into Slay the Spire a month or so ago, this seems rather interesting, especially the multiplayer aspect. I'm not a hugely competitive player, so "co-op multiplayer" is always a draw in my books.

Fun games for Steam Deck that won't break the bank

I went looking for good Deck games and found Symphony of War [External Link], which only came out back in June (Windows version only), for $18. It's got an interesting battle system where you move squads of up to 9 units around the map, and when you initiate a squad-on-squad battle there's a short, automatically-resolved fight between them. Proper squad composition (usually with a variety of units) is thus key; for instance, putting your defensive polearm wielders out in front of your squishy mages* is much better than the reverse! I will say that the UI feels slightly clunky and could probably stand another pass, but I found I actually preferred it on the Deck's gamepad controls to on my desktop.

*Or gunners or cannons – the game includes both magic (including dragons) and firearms.

Valve improves Steam Deck offline mode with more to come

That's cool. I haven't had any problems with offline mode yet, but it's clearly very important for a portable computer, so I'm glad to see Valve giving it some appropriate attention.

Steam Deck got a few Beta updates recently so here's what's new

Yeah, I got about 2 hours or so playing Stray. it really is a pretty huge leap in power necessary for 3D rendering compared to just putting a bunch of 2D sprites on a screen (though any comparison is complicated by other things that need power to compute too, like AI logic, which will all be unique to each game).

Easy Anti-Cheat not working on Linux? Seems a glibc update broke it

Quoting: EagleDeltaFor those that make comments about Debian "Stable" - I work in the tech space, security issues come in on a fairly daily basis and if things aren't updated almost constantly, they will sadly be vulnerable.
Hence why Debian stable includes frequent security backports fixing issues, without breaking functionality.

That's not to say that model is perfect, because there is no perfect model (or there'd be a single Linux OS); a few months ago I moved many of the programs I use (like Inkscape, Blender, GIMP, etc.) over to Flatpak to get updates more frequently. But for the underlying OS I like the stability and security.
