id Software going all-in with Vulkan, some interesting details about that and Linux for Stadia

Quoting: MaathI don't understand why Linux fragmentation is an issue. First, should the Linux Standard Base have largely homogenized Linux distributions to reduce such potential issues? Secondly, why isn't there an official "standard" distribution? I think Arch (and perhaps Linux From Scratch) try to minimize making any changes to the libraries and core software packages from the original developers, so it seems like that should be considered the "default" Linux desktop configuration. Deviation from the default should be the onus of the distribution, not the game developer.

I can understand a binary software release needing access to a software library not normally available on a system. In those cases, just statically link the library in. Since this is not open source software, we're already outside the scope of code reuse, and besides, it's not like people are firing up several games at once, so the image bloat isn't really an issue.
Well the simplest thing to do would be for games developers to actually just use the steam libraries as the target as in theory they are the same on every linux distro.

Quoting: MohandevirDid they actually explained why they did not release the Linux version on Steam?

Couldn't find the answer, unless the answer is: "Because of Stadia." It sounds incomplete to me and it's still quite weird, considering the fact that the Windows version is on Steam.

idSoftware Stadia test machine:
CPU: 8 threads Intel;
GPU: AMD Vega with 8GB VRAM;
Mem: 8-16GB RAM;
Ubuntu 18.04.

It'all standard desktop parts.
No the answer to why Doom didnt come out because ID is owned by Bethesda/Zeni max and Zeni max has no intention of ever supporting native linux games or mac games as they have said more than once and it doesnt take more than a quick google search. They believe the install base is too small for them to conisder it viable. Now before people do the flaming torch response as we as a community tend to do maybe showing them there is a market via buying games via steam play so after 2 weeks it shows as a linux purchase. If the numbers are there maybe we will get native ports whether it be from bethesda or by way of feral.

D9VK sees a first actual release for getting Direct3D 9 games running on Vulkan with Wine

Quoting: MekaDragonOk Valve, you know what to do.
When it matured probably they will include it on Proton. wined3d is enough to cover most of the needs for now , not like wined3d's 11 portion.
I think he meant fund that project like they fund dxvk

You can now play Minecraft Classic in your browser, as Minecraft is about to turn 10

Wow i personally dont get why anyone would play minecraft full stop but nice for fans to be given the classic version for free assuming its feature complete and has no issues underlinux good stuff.

BattlEye now say they're working with Valve to support Steam Play
11 May 2019 at 6:37 pm UTC

Quoting: EhvisI wouldn't be surprised if they *only* support steam games in Proton and not generic wine.
Well its not really an issue as the patches proton are sent upstream so no reason why wine wont just run out the box like proton but yeah if you have an issue it wont be supported. Why i guess brings people on to I dont use steam because DRM etc etc personally I admire the mindset it's just not one i share.

Easy Anti-Cheat are apparently "pausing" their Linux support, which could be a big problem (updated)

Quoting: liamdaweYou're making it sound like only the Linux community gets heated. That's very disingenuous and you know it.
When Windows gamers get "heated" the developers don't have the luxury to stop supporting them. That's not the case for Linux. "I want to, but it's not worth the drama" is an exact phrase I've heard.

Quoting: liamdaweSo you keep saying but without something to show for it, all people will think is you're another armchair expert trying to make themselves sound important. Stop doing it. I'm not trying to be horrible here, seriously, but it's very annoying when people use a line like this, repeatedly, like their opinion is more important than others.
I'm not saying my opinion is more important than yours, it's not, not sure where you got that. I'm just trying to give insight into how developers (particularly indie) tend to see the situation because I've been in that situation. If you don't believe me, that's fine. Maybe you could reach out to some developers who decided against a Linux port and ask them - off the record - their impressions of the community. I bet it won't be sunshines and rainbows.
No i bet not at the same time they should then interview Fereal interactive who would say there market is people who know there shit when it comes to coding and if you treat them like a second class market and dont put in effort into the port they will let you know. Now death threats should never happen over any game because thats just stupid. As for whether you are a game developer or a game q a tester i dont know or care But if you arent stop claiming you are its pointless.

Quoting: callciferIt's really funny how everyone already grabbed their pitchforks against Epic despite the whole connection being limited to a single line of unsubstantiated, irresponsible speculation by Liam.

No wonder why some companies aren't willing to engage with such a level-headed, well-mannered crowd...
Well we cant all be level headed and in anyway trying to edgy.... It's not just Linux attacking Epic its gamers in general including a sizeable windows market portion but peoples beef is mainly around exclusives price fixing at least here in the Uk as games are universally cheaper on steam than they are on the Epic store (cant speak to other regions)Yes they are business but many of there decisions are so anti consumer, I cant help but get a little pissed at the way they are approaching things. But maybe it's just me maybe fucking people over is the way to go but to suceed in business,it's not an approach i personally care for.

Facepunch Studios have given an update on the future of Rust for Linux, issues with "third parties"
5 May 2019 at 9:33 pm UTC

Quoting: FratmI do wonder about what will happen. In a way, they might be opening them selves up for a lawsuit, if the Linux community steps up and demands refunds and they do not get them. Really is a slippery slope if they drop all support. It basically means Linux users bought software that cannot be run anymore, due to a decision that the publisher made.

I stopped playing after the big patch that broke everything. Just got fed up with their lack of communication on the issues, I also took my server down, which was a thriving server, but if I cannot log into it to play or admin it, what's the point, right?

Facepunch has always been quite negative towards Linux gamers, so this doesn't surprise me, and I also do think I believe them 100% when they blame it on unity. Sure some issues can be Unity, but I also feel they don't want to invest time and money into finding a real solution to the issues, because they really don't give a sh*t about us.

Well yes and no legally you dont own any of your games you have on steam you have a licence for that game which remains property of the game developer. EULA are technically not enforceable legally but there is every chance they would get away with it in court

So Epic are happy to use linux backend software and to provide engine support (kind of to linux) but they dont have a linux client or any intention of developing one. They are buying whole studios to gain exclusives rocket league being a worrying high profile linux indie title that will now be leaving steam. I hope valve dont pull well a valve and cut off the money tap because things arent going as well as they planned (see Steam box/Steam Link/Steam broadcasting etc)

After suggesting a developer drop Linux support, Vivox have released a statement
5 May 2019 at 8:23 pm UTC

Quoting: dpanterGood to see them clear up a misunderstanding - but things like these keep happening. I don't understand why. :S:
I do for the reason stated before we are small market and its easier for greedy companies to see the profit margin in dropping support for a small market. However this is just a PR statement there is no action here that proves that this is not the widely held belief at this middleware company that they would prefer devs drop linux to make it easier for them to provide support.
